Valve Spring Seats

I'm just doing a top end rebuild on my XS after a cambelt "issue".

 

After I top the head off the block and started to remove the valve springs I noticed I was missing one lower spring seat I guess you would call it! It's more like a washer and sits around the valve guide, should I have 8 of them or does it not matter?

 

All the springs don't appear to have any major difference in height so I don't think they are used to shim the spring height, the only thing I can think they are there to do is to prevent the spring from digging into the soft aluminium head.

 

Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

I have an entire xs engine and box/shafts lol

 

All I want is the bottom end.

You should have eight. If you've not already then make sure you carefully check each end of the spring that didn't seem to have one as sometimes they can be stuck in quite a recess that has worn into the end of the spring.

I might be intrested in the box and head possibly. I'm going down for the New Forest Show next wednesday so might be able to pick it up either Tuesday Night or Wednesday afternoon evening.

 

Trogboy I did check the bottom of all the springs and in the head and couldn't find the missing one.

 

Has anyone got an XS engine they want rid? I need to get a spare for my road rally car.

no worries dude let me know, im unsure of what box it is as i cant find any markings on it but it came out of an xs attached to an xs engine lol...

 

I did write a for sale ad but it seems the mods havent approved it yet.
