Need A Tight Seat Frame Failed The Mot

Recommended Posts

Slo

My 87 e reg cti failed the mot today on drivers seat being insecure and front brake balance 29%. Ive ordered new brake disks and pads but im unsure what to do about the seat, ive taken it out and seperated all the frame and welded one side of every joint to sort of stiffen it up and put it back in but if it fails again has anyone got a spare or suggestions to tighten all the loose joints up?

ive also turned out the rubber bumpstops for want of a better word, the seat is a lot better but being a 2/3 door with lift forward seats its still very loose and a tad worried now to say the least as i will be without a car now if it fails

Is it the tilt mechanism that's to blame? You could take this out for the re-test and mount the seat straight onto the rail as a 5 door would - many people do this anyway to give more head room, I know I have.

Try clamping the frame together with something like an exhaust clamp or jubiliee clips this has worked for me in the past,it does not have to tilt to pass, take it off when you get home or find a MOT tester with a bit common sense, not easy these days !

Think you'll find that's wrong..

With the new regs "if the car has it, it must work"..

I might try that mcdude, i didnt realise you could miss out the tilt bit, which "is the part to blame". Minigibbo what do you want for the seat frame. And I dont know about clamping the seat down with anything but the mot tester told me that if i was going to weld the seat it only had to move forward and backwards, tilt doesnt matter but being a cti id end up ripping the seat out in frustration over time. Cheers for the suggestions guys.

Im not that tall to be honest lol, a mate was supposed to be taking it to someone for me that would overlook anything not serious but I was getting desperate and current mot runs out tonight so went to my usual place where there pretty good, im sure theres loads of other stuff he could pulled tho. New disks and pads are done and its ready for retest so we'll see

Very quick and easy job, you can always put the tilt back in after the MOT.

Just to follow this up, it passed the retest this morning. The seat is now ok and brake balance is 4% now with new disks and pads and cleaned calipers sorted!

Ive fitted a lower spec frame and it had no play in it at all, i had tightened all the frames and seat bolts up etc just in case. On the old MOT, as long as 3 are fitted well that is all thats needed, my Pug MOT man got it wrong at the time, the mot inspector that i had called out said so. I went to Pug when they were giving an MOT offer at the time.
