Plasticare - The Next Level

Recommended Posts

McDude

A few years ago I spruced up my Phase 1.5 with grey Plasticare. But it always looked a little bit light to me. But black Plasicare is surely too dark, even for a phase 2.

The solution? Buy a bottle of grey and a bottle of black and mix them!!!

Has anyone on here got any experience of mixing them? I spoke to Anthony who reckoned 25% black 75% grey but I'd welcome other opinions. I'm trying to acheive more like phase 2 level of colour. It seems to dry the same colour as when wet, so I'm guessing I can blend away to my heart's content until I acheive the colour I'm after, before applying.

I'll get blending and applying tonight, assuming the rain stays away.

I used black on my ph1.5, came out well - far too dark for the original finish but it makes it look more ph2ish, which i like! No experience mixing though. Id be interested to see how your concoction comes out!

That's 90% black with 10% grey mixed in, and to me, matches the original Phase 2 colour pretty well.

Fundle my bundles! That looks gorgeous Anthony.

I know my plastics shouldn't be that dark, but I do like them that way - 90% black/10% grey looks like a winner to me.

Will try and post up some before and after shots.

Just remember that the plastics that you can't easily dye - the scripted rear quarter badges for example - will likely stand out if you do the trim as dark as mine with the rest still being Phase 1 grey.

Given that your car is white, and hence the contrast with the paint will make the trim look darker anyway, I'd be tempted to go far more grey than black - hence my 75% grey 25% black suggestion. Also worth remembering that whilst you can easily enough darken trim, I'm not sure how well it would work trying to lighten it, so might be worth trying the lighter shade first and going darker later if you so wish.

(and thanks for the compliments - shame that it's not quite that good up close in the metal :( )

I found you can dye the rear quarters quite easily as the dye doesn't stick to the red paint.

Fair point about lightening, but not darkening.

Good tip that! I was wondering how to go about doing mine, now i know! I do have a spare quarter badge to make sure first though.

I was going to say & probably pointing out the obvious, but Ant's is a Ph2 as he says anyway, so even with the same mix Andy, your ph1.5 ones might not come out exactly the same shade.

Damn! Damn! And double damn this British 'summer'.

Get everything ready, mix up my Plasticare (I have to confess I Just added a bit of grey and a bit of black back and forth until I was happy, so no idea of the actual mix), started the job and then it rains like it's never rained before. ARSE!

When you paint the rear quarter badges, do you use something to clean the paint from the red letters?

Also did you mask the body?

I am asking as I plan on doing mine at some point but don't fancy removing the trim as there will be all sorts of problems associated with it I guess.

Kitchen roll to clean the letters up, just wipes clean off.

Others swear by a sponge to apply, personally I use a brush and cut in the edges as if I were painting a wall at home. It's not the end of the world if you get some on the paint as it rubs off once dry.

I thought you sold that car Mcdude. Looks good.

Every time I put it up for sale I chicken out. Currently in a state of love with the car again, plus I've moved house and cut my commute right down so the 205 as an everyday option is realistic.

Just had Anthony re-build the rear beam (and it is lovely) put on a PTS grp-N exhaust (and it is loud) and got my local friendly garage to re-spray the bonnet and replace the front wing - so it looks super lush.

If it would just stop frickin' raining I'd get the plastics done! I love the darker look, I just can't get a break with the rain - it was dry last night until I got everything out to do the job when I heard the rumble of thunder followed by another downpour.

Update: Job is mostly finished but this sodding rain keeps on screwing up the result. Plus the splash from a raindrop on plasticare makes black blobs all over the paintwork - aaaargh! Polishes out though.

Overall though, I'm chuffing delighted with the result, got a really nice hurricane grey out of it. It looks epic against the white paintwork. WIll post pictures up as soon as it stops raining.
