depends on use and application, but in most cases, a standard pug gasket will suffice.

Don't know if your TU is of the wet-liner type, but if so, be wary the oil and water ways on the front left corner (above the PAS pump) can be troublesome. I changed the HG last year after a head overhaul and within a month had oil in the water but with no other HG symptoms. Fitted a new HG with some extra sealant around those waterways and the oil in water has gone.

Took ages to flush the oil out of the rad though <_<

all alloy TU's have that bottom end ladder construction and wet liners, I don't think MLS ones work so well with alloy blocks and liners

Does it..? I really should of looked into these engines in more detail lol..

Someone commented on my journal on saxp saying with it being a 89/90 engine it would be "an early split block" I didn't know they are all like that.

Does my 1300 Rallye have the same type then out of curiosity..?

All alloy blocks run wet liner's, Only iron blocks are one piece, HG wise just a good quality one, Payen or Rienz are fine, anything else don;t bother with

to add onto this, how does the dealer gaskets compare to the ones you get at motorfactors..?

I normally just buy dealer parts but in a vain attempt of keeping this car on some form of budget lol..

For a gti6, I know that the o.e standard thickness gasket is best to source direct, as it comes out cheapest, with GSF not far off with a decent Victor Reinz item.

with many items like these, saving money now is not a good idea, especially from a professional fitters point of view where pattern parts often don't fit particularly well, leak straight from fitment (have had this with cam oil seals)

You can't go wrong with Victor Reinz, always been spot-on in my experience.
