So Gearboxes Ehh..?

Recommended Posts

MiniGibbo

Right as it stands for those who dont follow my thread..

uk 205 rallye

s1 106 rallye 1300 engine and gearbox

Now ive bought an 89/90 1400 xs split block which ive been made aware has a different shape bellhousing to my current MA box.

Can my current MA made be made to fit ie the 106 rallye box

how can i identify the box i have (pictures in my progress thread)

if i was to use this box supplied with the engine will my shafts work with it

ive also considered the BE box as im aware theyre stronger than the MA boxes but know absolutly nothing about them

what BE box would drive like my rallye box ie really short close gears

does the box bolt to my car (rubber mount's, subframe etc)

do i need other linkages if i went this route

could i use my current drive shafts or would i need other's

The question is.... what box do i use and how

I guess it depends on what you want to use the car for. Race, trackday, commute, long journeys, weekend.

I have used a standard xs gearbox on a 115bhp rallye for 6 years without problems. But I guess on it depends on how rough you change gears

http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?showtopic=128615&hl=conversion&fromsearch=1

that threads got info and part no's on the BE4R conversion

off the top of my head you'll need:

be4r gearbox

205 gti driveshafts

new clutch fork

bracket to allow clutch to be cable operated

I think intermediate driveshaft bearing carrier from same car as the gearbox

different speedo drive

bare in mind the box is heavier and larger

have a read through some of the topics on it

I think johnnygoodhand 's build thread from years ago had a good picture of a brand new be4r going in with his engine

Sandy

Older TU engines fit later MA casings no problem. Earlier MA casings don't fit Iron block TUs. No other problems I'm aware of. To do BE you need the TU BE casings and driveshaft mount and BE shafts. There isn't a "Sport" ratios TU BE box off the shelf, you'd need to mix and match your own gearset, which is no bad thing. The final drive and 3rd/4th/5th need to be all BE3 or all BE4, you can't mix that part.

Sandy told me my s1 rallye box will fit any tu engine so im sticking with that as its already in the car and perfect for my use as is..

Didnt want to fit a BE box for the added weight alone but it was the only other box i could think of if my ma wouldnt fit.
