Clocks/dials

Just want to know if you have to midify or touch the standard dials when carrying out a Mi16 conversion?

My dials have some interesting wires and solder all over them lol

Thanks

Ross

Not for a 1.9 Mi16 conversion - rev counter etc works straight out of the box.

For a 2.0 Mi16/S16 conversion you'll need to sort something out for the tacho though, as it won't work unmodified.

Is there a way to tell if its the 2.0 version?

It might just be a case of someone trying to repair the original circuit but want to check before replacing.

1.9 Mi16 is alloy block with a dizzy cap and HT leads

2.0 Mi16 is iron block with individual coil packs.

The ignition side of things is why you need to adapt the tacho, as the 205 tacho needs to see the pulse from a single regular coil, and won't work (without adaptation) with the later setups that the ECU generates the tacho output.

That would make mine a 1900 then.

I best get searching for clocks, anyone got a spare set?

Which is the best of these two?

Define "best"

Both have advantages and disadvantages, so depends what you're looking for.

In basic terms, a 2.0 Mi16 is a higher capacity (1998cc) iron block version of the earlier 1.9 with a variable inlet, more advanced engine management and ignition. It has less issues with oil surge, more torque and when the management/inlet work, better driveability, but on the other hand it's heavier, the management/inlet/coils can be problematic, and (on paper) slightly down on power unless you de-CAT it.
