Anyone Had Any Good Experience Spraying With An Aerosol Can

As the tittle says really, I have used a compressor but it really throws paint everywhere, a friend suggested using an aerosol on singular panels as they have come on quite a bit in technology (better pattern). He suggested U-Pol being particularly good, appreciate any replies.

I've been using U-Pol etch primer and high build primer on my bike resto and these are really good. However, I am struggling with the topcoat. I am finding it difficult to get a perfect finish, either getting orange peal effect or what I think is solvent popping. Although I can't work out where the solvent can be coming from. I'm using Simoniz at the moment and may well go back to Halford's, as (surprisingly!) I seemed to get better results with their paint.

Just use a hvlp gun to minimise overspray or even just turn the air down a little?

 

Depending on the colour (flat colours may be possible) you will get a sh#te finish out of cans.

 

I tried with graphite and had trouble laying the metallic bits evenly.

Hi, thanks, sometimes when I used a compressor i got the orange peel effect, I flatted it down with 2000 wet & dry then used a cutting paste to bring back up, cheers.

Thanks I sold my compressor after I finished my last project (swearing that I wouldn't do another), now I don't know if to buy another or give the can route a go. I'll do some googling around that gun, thanks.

i get top notch results from halfords aerosols but primer, base coat and laquer always needs wetsanding. Halfords laquer is absolute s*it, it doesnt harden fully, particularly near the petrol cap, any spillage will damage the finish/remove it in seconds. Apart from this i get stunning results....

Wow, that is a great picture, if I could achieve that level of finish I would be impressed, even if it requires flatting and work in between I am good to give it a go.

g3 polishing compound is an absolute must from halfords for the laquer finish, get number 2 and 3, out of 4, youll see what i mean if you go and see. DONT use any machinery to buff the laquer for at least a month as like i say the laquer never seems to go quite hard and it will stretch if you buff it too early, saying that tho its very easy to flat by hand with g3 I can thoroughly reccomend it.

ive read on hallfords reviews that their "petrol resistant laquer" is just as bad as normal stuff if any different, motorbike users tend to spill a little petrol on the tank when removing the nozzle after filling up, hence the problem. The paint is the best i have used and ive tried allsorts, not the best for colour match but ideal if doing a full job as its quite thick and doesnt run easily like cellulose and ive done a few.

My 205 at present needs finishing off but cant be arsed...

No problems on small scale, mine being a rally car there always small minor areas but on large panels i use a compressor!

I get the local panel place to make up my cans. They're so much better to paint with than Halfords, it's hard to do a crap job.

Good, glad we got that out the way. :lol:

 

Paints4U all the way, their aerosols are excellent and unlike the Halfords crap it actually hardens.

ive always used Jewels cans for large panels, a little pricey (around 11 a tin) but i painted a complete BMW 318 bonnet in red and the match was spot on and there was still enough paint left over afterwards to do the grill :D great finish after flatting and polishing too :)

I'm just about to spray my Xsara in 2 pk red, I keep seeing this "Flattening" word mentioned after painting, does that mean after painting you attack the paint with wet glass paper to get the best finish?

you use the finest paper usually 2500 grade 1500 will do tho, use plenty of water while sanding and use light pressure on the paint, remember to flat the primer first tho, and also to do the laquer after then you can buff the haze off with some g3 rubbing compound or similar to get the brand new look

You don't need to flat 2pack paint as 1: it's too tough when it fully cures and 2: it shouldn't need it given it settles out much smoother than cellulose .

I've never had a new car that the front bumper laquer has lasted on, admittedly I do high miles (40K) and not at particularly low mph, my current car is 12months old and already the front looks like it's been used as a small arms target in iraq, it's as though the paint is either not hard enough or not thick enough, it's not just the stone chips it's the general haze of it. I've tried everything from protecting polish to claying to clean.

 

It might be just how it is, as if you put a finished bumper in a booth and sprayed water and grit at it at 90mph for 444 hours (if my maths is right 40K miles) it would probably take the shine off it.
