To Scrap Or Sell?

Recommended Posts

Gabba

Hi guys,

I've got a 1.6 GTi at the moment that is currently SORN'd and its MOT runs out in August.

It's in reasonable nick, but isn't perfect and never will be.

At the moment quite a few of the coolant hoses are starting to fall apart. The tick over at first is quite lumpy and it has a habit of stalling when cold. Also the last few months of owning it, the MPG where lower than i expected as was lucky to get much more than 200 miles to a tank.

The passenger door was broken into with a screw driver behind the lock.

Anyway i've included a photo of it:

I'm just feel a bit guilt to just send to the scrapper, so would anyone be interested in it on here before i get it crushed?

Personally I would do a good write up with plenty of pics and get it on Ebay. I am sure with a carefully worded advert a 205 GTI with a month or so MOT to run that could be taxed and driven away should get you more than your £150 estimate.

Put it in the for sale section on here, for £150 someone will definitely have it off you. Infact if i had £150 spare right now i would take it off you now.... but i don't. If you haven't got rid in a couple of months... let me know!

Can you wrap it up and send to Slovenia? Just kidding but a car in this condition would sell here for 700 quid in a day. Even this one with the wheel on the "wrong" side I would buy for 600. Or you can make a visit to Slovenia with it and fly back with sleasyjet for peanuts. It's an adventure (both ways) :D.

all cheap and easy fixes. Get it on ebay and get it's true value. You'll get the usual suspects offering you a couple of hunfred quid looking for a quick buck, but just bat them off.

I can't be the only one finding it somewhat amusing that Phil_H is offering people advice on how to sell a car given the utter farse that the sale of his Laser has decended into. Indeed, if I wanted a textbook example in how not to sell a car, I'd point people straight at Phil's thread... <_<

Back on topic, I'm in two minds whether to close this thread given that it is a for sale advert to all intents and purposes, but for the moment I'll leave it be. If the price you've put in that link is all you genuinely want for it, the car will be gone before the day is out if you list it on Pistonheads and similar - assuming Slo hasn't already bought it.

The one and only piece of advice when it comes to selling a car is thus: "Cash talks, bulls**t walks"

got the cash RIGHT NOW lol but no reply got someone revved up to go fetch it with me too but NO REPLY so gabba come onnnnnnnnnnnnn

EDIT: unlike what other people are getting at i actually want it to use not break up or sell on as my cabby is getting into disrepair and its a little hard to do bodywork when its your daily and got school runs etc and mine is a phase 1 so should be almost identical :)

You're dead right there about the cash talks bit. I wasted days waiting it for people on here to show up from here and would have much preferred to sell on here, but ending up ebaying to the wider world to be messed around again. I'm actually donating all the money from the sale of mine, plus matching it from my own pocket to the local preschool, for new play equipment for their new astroturf playarea which cost them £8k after 3 years of fundraising, which is why I am not giving mine away. The main dealers have also donated as a condition of my ordering a new 208 from them. My laser will soon need planning permission and be on Ordnance Survey maps.

Well worth some good money, ebay with an honest description would sell, it certainly gets the interest.

Phil,

Without turning this topic into a flame session, ive seen numerous comments about you being messed about re the sale of the lazer green Gti.

I didnt bother to reply to the sales post, but your now contributing to another topic of how your the one being messed about...

Going back through my PMs, i think i was the first person to contact you about the laser car. I even sorted train times and booked the day off work on a couple of occassions, only to recieve PMs saying there was one issue or another, that you needed to sort... The last PM i received said You would get to get back to me once the starter was sorted ( i wasnt bothered about water leak etc ) and you never did.... next thing its on ebay, followed by posts of you complaining about being messed about..

As Anthony says, your topic was a classic example of how not to sell a car, and instead of complaining about other members, maybe you should take a look closer to home on whos being messing who about.

Regards

Ant

I think its a shame to scrap any 205 GTI that needs a little work now. I reckon there is always someone on here willing to save a tired old 205 from the scrap yard. Unless the shell is a complete mess with rust and welds that is.

Ant, in your case my concious got the better of me and I was not happy to let you drive a car leaking water and would have needed numerous top ups on the way home up the motorway and if you,ve ever had to stop on the hard shoulder, you'll know what I mean. I did this once when I bought a Golf Cabby for the misses a few years ago and it overheated on the M25. Not a nice place to be. Unfortunately, with work, children and voluntary work with the disabled, fixing cars isn't top of my to do lists, so no offence taken, if you can get a trailer, then pop down.

£4-£500 worth of 205 GTI even as it stands with minimal MOT in my opinion.

On the whole I'd say the members of this forum dramatically undervalue 205 GTI's, and even they think this one is a bargain at £150.
