Doesn't matter Craig, they're all the same.

Mine is from a 1998 2.0 XSI too...

If you can, check that the abs light goes out before you strip the system.

The pump control units can fail (they're not too hard to change or get fixed but...)

My first one was broken when I fitted it. It took me hours to find the problem because I had no diagnostics without an OBD socket.

Also, with hindsight, i'd have taken the OBD socket from the donor (I think the link loom is not really viable to remove, and the pinout is on here somewhere from when I asked)

Thanks for the info :) The scrapyard have offered to give a guarentee on the pump and will replace it if faulty (not bad considering they only want 50quid for the entire system) but I think that is a sensible suggestion to check the system in the car if I can. I will see if they have a key available to test it in the car.

Cheers,

Craig

Bit of a bump, but I am slowly collecting bits :)

Anyway, next question- are these (http://www.jandrcvjoints.co.uk/citroen-zx-1-8-1-9-1-9td-2-0-abs-cv-joint-new-91-98/) suitable CV joints? The only ones on ECP I can find are Q-Drive, which I would rather avoid, at least thse ones come with a 2 year guarentee. Seem ok, unless anyone can recommend a better supplier?

Thanks,

Craig

That's cheap! I think they'd be about £35 locally.

Thats what I thought! I did wonder if they were suspiciously cheap, but with a 2 year guarentee, they should be ok surely? Cant be any worse than spending alot more on a Qdrive one! http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Citroen_ZX_1.9_1997/p/car-parts/car-transmission/transmission-parts/cv-joint-kits/?657543441&1&d90e40e1a84f5c5c5df8750c8f71ea184853da79&000095

Edit: Had the wrong non abs link to ecp!

Hmm, some extensive googling suggests the quality of the JandJ ones are about 50/50. People have had them failing within days/months, and they are quite good at trying to get out of the 2 year warranty by insisting that the car must have been lowered to damage the CV..

Does anyone have experience AMK CVs? Given there is a surcharge on them, I guess they are remanufactured.

Also, this is the correct spec for a 1.9 shaft?

TDL9483R Description CV Joint

Fitment Outer Vehicle Info with ABS ABS

ABS teeth = 29

Internal splines = 23

3 External splines = 25

Supplied with TSB168, N2109

Hub seal Dia. = 55.7 mm

Thanks, Craig

AMK I believe is a Motaquip brand, I've used the boots which were ok but not quite o.e quality like GKN.

From memory the spec is correct and will fit the 1.9 bar, the larger CV's I think used more splines between bar shaft and CV, that's stuff like 16v 306's TD xsara's ZX's partners etc.

I think I still have a Doc on my PC with the data if I haven't lost it.

I've found AMK to be the better recon shafts I have bought. Much better than Shaftec and whatever the cr@p supplied by GSF is called, Vetech?

The couple of AMK branded shafts that I've used have been fine, and another on a friends car that was noisy with a plate diff but quiet on a standard open diff.

Not as good as GKN of a few years ago (quality subjectively seems to have slipped since) but certainly better than the majority of stuff out there now that is frankly worse than a typical 20 year old used item and extremely questionable what "reconditioning" has taken place and certainly to what kind of standard.

Thanks chaps. Seems like AMK are the best out of a mostly bad bunch then!

I was considering ordering a pair of 309 shafts from GSF. Who supplies the AMK brand? GSF give a decent exchange price which was why I was looking at those.

Motaquip do/did AMK as do some motorfactors.

One of the biggest issue with GSF is that you're never quite sure what you're going to get - one week you'll get a quality part, and the next you'll get something awful that's barely fit for purpose. I've pretty much stopped using them for this very reason now with the exception of stuff that you know what you're going to get or that they have in stock so that I can see it before purchasing, which is a shame as there's a branch 5 minutes from my house and historically GSF were quite good (particularly when it was still Andyspares before the German Swedish bought them out!)

Honestly, don't bother. Locally I can buy AMK through either a big Unipart factors or my local Motaquip dealer factors. I have stopped using GSF now after too much CRAP supplied.

Couldn't find the file I had, must have lost it when my HD's died :(

However a little bit of google sleuthing dug the relevant info up.

Std 1.9 CV is AMK part# TDL9439R

External Teeth : 25
Internal Teeth : 23

90mm O.D.

205 ABS is TDL9440R

External Teeth : 25

Internal Teeth : 23

Outer Diameter : 88 mm
ABS Teeth : 90

and also:

TDL4901R
External Teeth : 25

Internal Teeth : 34
Outer Diameter : 88 mm
Length : 46 mm

ABS Teeth : 48

Note, too many teeth on the ABS ring to be compatible with the rear hubs in both cases, would send the system potty! Also the second one wont fit the inner bar shaft.

The part number you found is the right one to use, all the numbers match up.

TDL9483R

External Teeth : 25
Internal Teeth : 23
Seal Diameter : 55.8 mm
Outer Diameter : 88 mm
Length : 44 mm
ABS Teeth : 29

Peugeot/Citroen part numbers are

  • 3272 E5
  • 95656495

I haven't made note of any of the CV's I have taken apart, but looks like the solid bar shafts are the lower spline count, the larger hollow ones the higher spline count, just speculation though.

I Found an AMK seller on ebay.

That's the thing that does put me off using them actually. Not knowing what brand will be supplied. A new branch has sprung up locally so was going to pop in and see what brands they offered.

I've a Unipart and Motaquip local so will see if they exchange :)

*SNIP*

Thanks for taking the time to look that all up :) I had just found that seller, they look like they'll be worth a punt at that price.

Cheers for the help all! One more part sorted, now just got the rear bearings and the rather expensive sensors to sort!!

Not sure if this would be of any use to you, but my brother removed the abs off his 1991 1.9 GTi and then kept some of the bits in his garage. i think he still has the block with all the pipes coming out of it. He took it off as the sensors kept corroding and then the warning light kept coming on just when it was going for the MOT:)

Hmmm, I am not sure if it matters but I am just looking at the number of ABS teeth quoted. Pretty sure my car has shafts with 48 teeth on (or 40-something anyway). I remember seeing shafts with 90-something teeth a while back and wondering about them. I did fit them in a previous ABS 205. I seem to recall that the system didn't like them, so I took them out.

However if you are using a decent modern system then it may not be an issue anyway!

The later ABS systems off 306's etc use less teeth (29) than the 205 ABS system, hence not being able to use 205 ABS shafts/CVs

Strange, you'd have thought the more modern system would have more teeth for better speed detection and resolution!

I assume the sensors have improved, as most modern systems I have seen, seem to have less, rather than more teeth!

Also, I will have a pair of ABS driveshafts in pretty good order to sell at some point if you might be interested for your ABS spares? :)

90-teeth one had problems with crap/oxidation building up in the teeth and rendering the ABS system useless.

Next question, (dont worry, nearly there now ;)) it is 306 GTi6 ph1 rear wheel bearings I want? I have the stub pins and spacer washer thing from a 306, which I believe I need.

Thanks, Craig
