Blower Fan Always Running

Recommended Posts

mastakilla

Hi, I have removed the blower fan to clean it and put a couple drops of oil on it as it was squealing badly..it was also working porly, I think because the intake was full of dirt and leaves.

Now it seems to work fine, but there are two things that puzzle me: the first is, even when the right lever (fan speed) is on the minimum position, I can still hear it spinning. Is it normal? the car has 77k kms (at least this is the number I see on the dash) but I have noted that the motor brushes are very worn, and so are the copper bits on the rotor on which they make contact.

The second is that while the air output is good when the lever is on the "from outside" position, it is completely absent when the lever is in the "recirculation" position..again, maybe it's ok and I just have to realize this is a car from the 80s?

Thank you very much

Is this a phase 1 car? They had fans that were always on as far as I know.

Yes it is a 1987 1.9 gti, so I guess it's a phase 1

mines a phase 1 1.6 and fan isnt always on, your heater cables may be out of line so not turning completely off

Yeah mines a 1987 1.9 phase 1 too, which does this also. This is normal.

no it isnt normal if your fan doesnt turn completely off somethings wrong and it will probably be the rheostat, remember hes talking about the heater blower fan not the rad fan which will run slow when it gets a little warm

Thank you all for the answers...I've noted that if I turn the ignition key when the fan lever already is on the lower position (OFF?) then the blower does not start, but once it does, it does never shut down completely. I'm not going to investigate this any further as I think I'll want a bit of fan running when driving anyway so no big deal!

On the early Ph 1 cars the fan never stopped completely when the ignition was switched on, it just ran very slowly if the lever was on the lowest point. If you read some of the road tests of the period at least a couple of magazine writers picked up on this and criticised it.

hmm, mine must be faulty then cos it turns completely off lol, strange thing though if i unplug the fan control on the dash the motor starts up slowly by itself <_<
