Smoke Comming Out Of Oil Filler Cap

Recommended Posts

jonnyturbo

my 2.0 turbo engine has been nothing but hassle, iv changed every sensor for brand new to cure the overfueling i was having and now having fixed it, its still missfiring and popping from the exhaust. i recently took the oil filler cap off after running the engine for a couple of mins and smoke stared billowing out of it which is the only word i can think of, the smoke smells like petrol. plugs are a nice gray colour on the tip which im sure means its firing fine?

after googling this it seems to be pointing to rings? could this be causing my missfire and bogging down anything above 1.5k revs?

probley as much smoke as this maybe a little more.

this can be a faulty injector, making the misture very rich.

Maybe you should drive a Peugeot as they are maintenance free

If you drop the oil, does it smell of fuel?

When was the oil last changed?

Many cars that are in need of a service will smoke out of the cap such as that, especially when warm but on the old XUD engines, smoke was a sign of bore wear iirc.

this is the 3rd set of injectors iv tried. and around a month ago i changed the oil, not dropped any oil and smelled it yet but it does smell pritty bad of petrol when its smoking from the cap.

yes thats not my video the engine is in a 306 lol

everything has been changed for brand new sensor wise, also fitted another fuel pump, wiring loom, turbo, more earths on the engine, 2 different inlet manifolds, new vac pipes, different dump valve

engines an xu10 petrol turbo engine by the way.

Have you done a compression test? If there was something bad enough with the rings to cause the running issues you talk about then it should be very obvious on a compression check IMO.

are they the correct injectors for the engine, stock fpr, confirmed tps+cts work? lambda confirmed to work etc?

correct injectors, tried 3 stock fprs including inlet manifold its self, new tps, new tps and new lamba.

not done a compression test recently but will do one this weekend.

when i start it up it idles when chokes on fine but this is what it sounds like as soon as it idles normally

that sounds like it has a lumpy camshaft! ecu will enrichen and hold the idle higher until warm, then the idle will settle lower.

If not a camshaft, then possibly if the timing is out a tooth! check the timing holes line up.

my mazda didn't go well when i set it out a tooth, it popped and banged and stuttered.

Did you use a genuine management temp sensor? Was it new?

yea davie brand new genuine, also tried a couple of others i had from previous turbo engines and still the same. yeah white/grayish smoke, i had the engine running fine at one point but turbo was smoking so changed it for a different one and the problem started again.

ok done a compression test and as far as im aware iv done it right, the engine was warm when i did the test, i got told to do 3-4 rotations of the engine but the engine turns over that fast its hard to get it spot on 3-4.

from cambelt > fly

100 psi 90 psi 75 psi 100 psi

if i let the engine turn over 7-8 times the psi went to 125 on the last cylinder.

also tried a different set of spark plug leads incase the new ones were damaged at all but only had a set of 1.9 gti leads at hand so hopefully they were up to the job but made no difference anyway.

Miles

Far too low even for a Turbo engine, try it with a very small about of oil in the bore, this will confirm the rings or not

think mine was about 150psi on a turbo engine, and well over 200psi on an mi16.

My turbo one has just spat what looks like all its oil out of the breather, so rings or HG, saying that ive had one thats cracked the block before

am i right letting the engine turn over a few times or keep turning it over until it stops going up on the guage?

il do a cold compression test today, cold with oil test and then a warm with oil test and post my readings.

checked the head gasket already and it was fine but changed it anyway, had the head compression tested and valves all relapped and shims checked too so i know thats fine so if anything it will be the block at fault.

surely the rings wouldnt cause my running issues im having though? and would i not get blue smoke out the exhaust if it was the rings?

ok did another test today when cold, not sure if your suppost to but took all spark plugs out and the engine turned over alot slower so could get a better reading of how many rotations it was doing, anyway got 155 give or take a few. so now where do i go from here in fixing my problem?
