Starter Motor And Random Question

Recommended Posts

arwel

Did a rally in Caerwent yesterday.. had bit of an off which resulted in the car not starting after it. Looks like either the starter motor or ring gear on the flywheel is at fault as the car will now start but makes an awful noise in the process of turning over. Whats the easiest way of getting the starter out? Its a standard 1.9 8v engine.

Also whilst im here.. a friend of mine has a very tidy non sunroof diesel rolling shell. How much work is involved making a non Gti shell into a Gti shell?

Cheers

Arwel

I always favour the out from underneath approach - this allows you to remove very little to remove but is a little fiddly.

Otherwise remove the inlet etc etc/

pop the oil filler hose off and it'll fit down between block and rad with a wiggle, even if its the big bigger.

base model shells have been used to re-shell many a gti rally car, fit gti front wings and cut the rears out and seal back up

You can see the ring gear by either taking the inspection cover off of the bottom or the timing plate on the top.

I got it off this morning.. flywheel has little marks but other than that is fine. Took starter out and compared it to a good one I have and it seems that its partially jammed up so looks like that is the problem. I took the rad out to since I want to change it for a new one so shall hopefully be back up and running in the next day or 2.
