206 Gti 180Bhp Engine Swap?

Recommended Posts

rgp205

Hello folks,

Thinking ahead for the next project... how easy (or difficult) is it to transplant the engine from a 180bhp 206 GTi into a 205?

Was thinking of the Mi16 transplant (need to keep normal aspiration for competition class) however getting a genuine 180bhp means a larger spend than going for the 206 engine (is that an S16?) but is it an easier job?

All advice welcome!

Ta much,

Gary

Its not a S16 that very similar to the 2.0 iron block MI, its a ew engine and requires different engine mounts welded in, special drive shafts and after market management.

not quite allye.

The only fabrication would be on the lower fork, and the driver side top arm mount.

Shafts are the same as BE.

As for management, depends on what you want the engine to do, carbs/bodies/standard/charged.

gearbox mount requires fabrication almost from scratch due to the different inclination of the EW engine (~15deg vs ~30deg)

Been looking into this myself and the ones I've seen so far have had chopped and re-welded custom driveshaft’s, 180 inners and d-turbo outers? It’s the one thing that has been putting me off to be honest.

One thing worth noting is that in europe the 206 GTI is called the S16 or RC. Pointless info perhaps.

I dont see why the engine inclination affects the gearbox mounting.

Its the bellhousing that's different not the main casing where the mounting sits, hence if you use this with the standard 205 position, Fab the top arm and lower fork, you can use standard shafts if you have the correct type of intermediate bearing carrier.

much the same as fitting a BE onto a TU in a 205 shell.

engine sits under a 15 degree angle instead of the XUs 30 degree angle.

Because of that the BE3/4 box uses a different flywheelhousing to compensate this.

We mated a 206GTi BE4 flywheelhousing to a BX BE3 gearbox. Easier would have been just to use a 206GTi gearbox (which bolts straight in), but we did not have that at the time.

The driversside enginemount has been extensively modifed and the bottom end mount (the fork) has been shortened.

there you go, no chassis mods, no transmission mount mods.

Please bear in mind that when Hilgie talks about driver's side engine mount the car is Left Hand Drive. I do not know for certain (because I have not actually had first hand experience of fitting this engine into a 205 as it seems some others have) what the gearbox mount situation is when swapping gearbox casings/bellhousings (as Sandy I believe advises against) but the gearbox mounting point on the 206 engine is different to the BE3 one and is not just a post screwed into the casing. I have yet to see pictures of a gearbox mount on a 205 shell with EW which uses the 205 mounting/battery tray.

Please feel free to prove me wrong on this.

No one has yet pointed out the fact that the brake servo has to be moved due to clearance.

see matt180's Standard transmission mounting.

given the crank centreline is the same, and the engine sits at 15 degrees, and its a shorter deck height, why does the servo need moving?

Maybe you should have a look at the rest of Matt180's Pictures and project and you will see that it is not standard, but has been modified. Better still actually ask him!

Again, you can ask him about the servo being moved to the other side. I am not going to argue with you about something which I havent experienced yet myself. Maybe you have fitted one into a 205 shell and can comment better on it other than just quoting other's pictures?

Thanks for all the comments folks, need to look at this carefully, not concinved it's a better bet than going for an Mi16 with throttle bodies...

After speaking in depth with a certain few people who have done this style of conversion, a EW will sit correctly, in a standard 205 shell, with a custom driver side mount and lower fork alterations.

Make of that as you will, but when I get round to fitting a 2.3 ill know who ill listen to.

Also, afaik they use the same differential . : you can fit a be3 diff. which to me make sense that you can run standard 205/309 shafts.

Dunno, it does look like a standard 206 GTi servo. The whole brake mechanism (including bar) seems to have been grafted on. Not sure if the hydraulic clutch has been retained either.

I started my 206 gti 180 conversion about..... . . . . . hmmm 18 days ago, so far I have pulled out all the interior installed the cable gear selector, which involved cutting, grinding, making a box to support the new selector housing welded it in place put back all the interior,

Install the engine, all three mounts need work!!! gearbox mount is hardest by far!!!

installed a mk 3 mondeo brake bar and servo which need cutting and welding to fit in the engine bay,

plumbing done need a few bends n new lentghs of pipe etc,

omex management and 205 loom almost finished waiting on a soldering iron n heat gun for sleaves to do proper job,

I still need to sort the brake pedal out and wheather to go hydraulic clutch or cable?? the 406 v6 clutch is mint has its own resovoir so only one pipe from master to slave cylinder or use berlingo cable n citroen hydro to cable bracket???

I spent 3 weeks putting 2.0 8v turbo in 309 it lasted 4 weeks then rod knock i dint check oil it was soo fast 250ish bhp terry1600 has exactly same set up on here n dyno'd that result did our conversions together, turbo's just lack the instant zip for me yeah they r quick but there's a delay.

I won't say this conversion is easy but it's NA, it's a fast strong engine ( read embrace the ew), and it looks really neat in the engine bay, proba ly the nicest looking engine if you ask me and because you have to change brakes to other side you end up with better brakes and if you put biggef calipers you don't get that long pedal travel!!

I am going to start my own thread when jt's finished, I have pics of different things I had to do along the wy I will be taking the engkne back out next month to tidy up the bay and have it sprayed etc, so can take more pics sill be usefull for people looking at starting it themselves.

grammer etc n punctuation will be edited on computer I have gone back over some words 10times touch scren phones wind me up.
