Mot Tomorrow-Terrified After Full Rebuild!

Recommended Posts

Sinbad

Tomorrow afternoon my 1.6 gti is in for MOT,i bought it in August last year needing an engine, which kinda spiralled into a full rebuilt engine, painted bay, replacing lots of parts and a 2nd hand rear beam.

I just need to fit a set of drums and check and double check everything.

The test station is 40miles away, the prospect of driving there terrifies me hahaha.

Im not scared of something going wrong, moreso something going wrong and being on my own and it being stuck in a dangerous place for example lol

Anyone ever had feelings like this??

I drove it round my area last night to try bed the brakes in a little (they still feel very poor!) thats the furthest i have driven it so the 40 mile drive, well im a little apprehensive to say the least!!!!

If you've put it together properly it'll be fine :)

Give it a quick glance over before you leave to make sure you've not overlooked anything glaringly obvious and wise to chuck a few tools in the back so that you can address any niggles that come to light driving to the MOT, but otherwise like I said, if you've put it together properly there won't be any reason to worry unduely.

It caught fire during initial start up through no fault of my own and thats whats made me wary.

Its just the brakes im worried about,i think its just cos they need bedding in again.

After tomorrow,if it passes i'll be driving round aimlessly til pugfest, which is a 424mile round trip for me-yikes lol Should be run in by time i get back (if i make it lol)

If you are travelling down to Pugfest on Saturday you are welcome to meet up with myself and a few from this area, we'll be away down the M1 around 12-13:00 hrs.

I was pretty nervous driving mine for the first time after a full rebuild!! Just keep a keen ear out for any suspicsious rattles/knocks/things falling off, and keep an eye on the oil pressure and water temp. Im sure it will be fine :)

Is there not an MOT station closer than 40 miles? Just for peace of mind.

Plenty. But the garage comes well recommended by a few friends of mine from my home town.

And its a small run out before pugfest.

Tom, i have to drop my kids off at my parents in Hull on the sat afternoon so i'll be a couple of hours behind but thanks for the offer though.

After my reshell, I had similar fears and a little pressure.

MOT a little closer but 5 days after that after an initial shakedown of 100 miles we drove it to and from the French/Spanish border! 2000 miles all in all.

Whilst it can be a little unnerving having all the pressure of the car functioning correctly on your shoulders, i would prefer that to driving a car that somebody else had just built!

thanks for all the advice and words of encouragement.

Gave it a once over tonight, all seems ok except my heater blower isnt working, tried cleaning up the relay block that gets wet and no avail,i do have power at the plug though-which wires bridge it to check the motor??

Also ran it up to temp and the coolant temp gauge read half way and i had the cap off to top up the coolant and when i turned it off it bubbled over? air lock maybe??
