Finding Then Fitting A New Gear Stick

Recommended Posts

Road Pest

Hi All,

I'm looking to replace the gear stick in my 205 GTI (late BE1) but after a days searching I can't find one for a start but also can't work out how to remove the old one. The old one was hacked a bit so the new to me original gear knob won't fit.

Can they be removed from inside the car by taking out the centre console or do they pop off the long rod from underneath the car then remove from inside and slide the new stick down? I guess what I'm asking here do I need to get the rubber gaiter inside the centre console off or not. Can't find a pic anywhere without the rubber gaiter at all.

Or is it best to get a quickshifter and if so will it fit the original gear knob?

Thanks in advance.

Phil

You need to remove the centre console to gain access to the mechanism,

once that's out of the way unclip the reverse stop cable, unbolt the steel plate that sits on top of the rubber gaiter, separate the two halves of the rubber gaiter and you'll see the main pivot.

pop the long rod off underneath, a good time to replace the plastic bushes and tighten everything up.

I doubt you'll get one from Peugeot these days.

I know you can't yet, but once you have enough posts you can put up an add in the wanted section here and some will have on for sure.

Ooorrrrr you could go to your local scrap yard and find a 205 diesel and take that one out and pay a couple quid for it :D

Can't get the centre console out! Need to remove seats now... Still I have found the original gear knob behind the stereo so now have two :)

The drivers side edge of the centre console was wet so presume that's coming through from the bulkhead? (Car hasn't been out of the garage for months either!)

Looked at a couple of places yesterday, got one more to try and then I'll have to pay the £75 if that's what it is. :(

I've got a BE1 gear knob in the for sale section. Can sort you out with a stick assembly if your still looking for one.

no need to remove the seats!

have you taken the two 8mm nuts off from inside the centre console under the radio?

No seats were harmed in this exercise :excl:

The passenger seat is stuck forward so the console wouldn't come out... managed to drop it back eventually and got the console out. Next job will be for when I get the new stick then. Chipstick, if you have an unmolested stick I'd be happy to take it off your hands. Ordered some new bushes too so will have a clean up fit them and it should be all right as rain :)

Once I have cleaned the engine bay, fitted a new battery, got the belt changed, refitted the original air pipes, welding done on the sills... I might even get to drive it again

Thanks for all the help too.

RE the wetness that's going to be your heater matrix leaking.
