Rolling Road Booked.... What Figures She Going To Make?

Recommended Posts

madspikes

I have finally got my ass into gear and book the supercharged pug in for a rolling road session for this Tuesday!

My question (or just thinking out loud) is should I go for glory and get it mapped using shell optimax or just the tesco 95 I normally feed it! I know I should get it mapped using the tesco 95, but its tempting to fed it some good fuel for once!

The aim was for the car to make 170bhp - so how far do we think I'm off? I'm thinking closer to 160bhp...

You need to map it on the fuel you will use. So if you plan to always run on super, map it on super. Otherwise map it on 95 and accept that it will run a fraction less timing and hence power. What boost is it making from the charger? What are inlet temps like?

Cant remember what management you're running - can it handle two maps and you switch between them depending upon your mood ;)

BTW 166.3bhp

Its running a MS2, could do two maps but thats twice the effort.

I know, i know... but we all like big numbers! But its going to get a tank full of tesco 95 - and like it! Charge temps are fine, they are basically ambient, maybe a degree or so above, havent seen anything that stands out. Its running, 6psi of boost, on a standard 1.9 engine.

Use the tesco's 99 ron!! It's 5% biofuel which is how they got their 99ron to begin with, a why their fuel doesn't matter how long it's rem sat in the stations fuel tanks as it won't drop.

And, it's loads cheaper than v-power or optimax...!!

I'll be interested in 'the area under the curve' (if you'll be kind enough to post the graph for us), as the peak figure isn't really important.

I know, boring 'same old story'; but I'm old and believe that's a truer reflection of the engine's performance.

What pulley ratio and rev limit are you pulling mr spikes?

Id like to think you were always running on the dear stuff (97+Ron) with your hi C/R ;)

Pah, the standard 1.9 engine has quite a low C/R compared to most modern N/A engines.... so she;ll take a forced induction. :P Above 3k I dont seem to have an issue with det, between 2k and 3k i've had to back the ignition off quite a lot to control it. The det is under control, but needs investigating. Not sure if changing the fuel helps.

As to pulleys, I dont remember the ratios, but its the standard copper pulley on the charger and a mi16 crank pulley.

Rev limit is set to 6k, cant decide if I should up that, was going to look up what people normal run there cars up to. Thinking of shifting it to 6.5k.

You are in fact correct, and I think there should be some good gains over the 2k to 4k area. My gut feeling is at the top end the gains are going to be less as the supercharger is running out of puff. I've got what I wanted a very drivable car (ok throttle is a little switch like), I just need some of the rough edges taken off things.

I'm surprised your not making a bit more boost than that to be honest, but I'm gonna guess with the mapping tidied up and going a bit more adventurous with the ignition at the top end.......180bhp

Area under the map is always going to be impressive with this type of charger ;)

Re switch like throttle on my new build I'm going with a twin throttle body set up, 50mm BOV with a 3psi spring and I may attempt to alter the pedal ratio a little in an attempt to smooth it out.

I'd been toying with the idea of using an external wastegate and a boost controller to bleed some boost off when you Initially press the throttle. I decided I'd need an new ecu though and it'd be getting a bit too complex for my liking :P

Humm shell v-power is 6% more expensive than regular fuel, humm maybe its worth it.... and maybe I should with reference to my comments about det.

I'm not too far bost wise where we expected to be, but I think the charger is slightly past its best!

I've been looking into various things to improve the switch like throttle! Firstly looking at re-shaping the throttle quad as a mechanical soloution, the second is an electronic 'dump' valve to bleed off boost at low throttle angles and engine speed. I have yet to find a electronic dump valve at a sensible price. I'd control it using either something on the ECU or a piggy back circuit.

Ok the scores on the doors are (running tesco unleaded 95): 178.9bhp @ 6000rpm, 175ft lb from 3500rpm - 4700rpm of torque.

I will post the graphs when I get the scanner working - I declare myself very happy.

That sounds none too shabby at all :)

Is it noticeably improved following a proper mapping session compared to your self-mapping on the road?

Good result, you should be happy with that. How much tweaking of the map did the guy do from where you had it?

If it made peak power at 6k rpm which is your rev limit then I'd definitely be upping that, I see no reason why the 1900 engine can't rev to 6500rpm?
