Underpowered Mi

Hi all,

I was hoping someone can give me some advice regarding my Mi converted 205.

I've been in other Mi's and also comparing it to a mates clio 172 it appears to not pull as I would expect when really going for it.

The car drives fine, idles well and seems to pull well low in the revs but it seems pretty pointless as it currently is taking it above ~5k Rpm and I'm sure this isn't right. It is wired in properly and running off a crank sensor so I'm guessing by this that timing won't be my issue?

I've checked all the basics like plugs etc and when checking these they indicate the engine is running healthy, it's been fully rebuilt about 4k miles ago with all new bearings, seals, piston rings etc so I would expect the engine to be 'a good one'.

The only thing I've noticed that I wonder if could be at fault is the exhaust is a complete bodge, I'm currently trying to source a replacement one to eliminate this as being the problem but does anyone have any other suggestions of what I could look at to get her going like she should do?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated

Check your cam timing, as they have two tensioners its quite easy to throw the timing a long way out.

Swap the AFM with a known good one. My Mi seemed quite quick when I first got it (didn't have much experience of them to compare though) but then I noticed it was really struggling at higher speeds. Shortly after that my AFM totally failed and it was transformed once that was replaced (the flap jammed inside).

You mentioned the exhaust being bodged, so check if the downpipe has a central divider and if it's split near the manifold and is blocking the pipe. Also if it's got s*itty pattern boxes they could be strangling the flow.

Thanks both for the advice.

I'll check over the cam timing the soon as I get chance and also see if I can source a known good Afm. Is there any other way I can test it's functioning correctly without swapping it?

Funnily enough mine, much like your's, seemed quicker when I first got it but I was putting this down to me having got used to it but perhaps I am seeing the start of the same problem.
