Any Difference

Recommended Posts

phil739

Looking to buy my first 205. I have found one that was a 1.6 but has the mi16 fitted

My question is

Is there any difference between a 1.6 with mi16 and a 1.9 with a mi16

Also what things should I be looking for

Sure there will be plenty more questions later. Lol

Thanks

Depends what's been changed over the years. Seats, wheels, disc brake rear beam etc. As I say, these may have been changed about though in 20 years.

Have a search for 1.6 and 1.9 differences.

To be perfectly honest I would take each car you look at on it's individual merits, I would not personally be too bothered what it started life as. Check carefully for rust. Check the rear beam is sound, ideally with a record of having had some attention. Check the car drives in a straight line especially when going on and off the throttle. The car should have reasonably sharp steering, make sure it doesn't tend to lurch when steering into a corner.

Also don't get too hung up on the chassis mileage. I've seen later cars with many less miles than mine in worse condition.

If its got history and been well maintained this will pay dividends. Even if it doesn't have a great deal of history, you'll soon see if it's been looked after.

I have various receipts from group n engine mounts to full engine rebuild build with a decoke and 16 new valves.

As I guess you're buying it for the engine, I'd want as much info about this as possible. Why the rebuild, why the new valves? Engine rebuild could mean anything - What was done? Head, shells, guides etc....

Just to echo Tom, check the beam out as a rebuild / replacement could cost upwards of £400 (judging by the prices on here), other than that just the same checks as any other car you'd buy - corrosion, crash damage etc

Looks good in the advert B)

One surprising difference between the two would be insurance. Some insurance companies (Adrian Flux included) treat an engine swap of different capacity differently to an engine swap of the same capacity. So when I Mi'ed my 1.9, they just asked for engine capacity, when I said 1905cc that was all they asked.
