Gti-6 Mpg

Recommended Posts

Russ_T

Please someone, set my mind at rest.

Without putting it on tbs, or tuning it up, what mpg are people getting from GTi-6 conversions please? I was all about the DTurbos until I saw some conversion videos earlier, they sound so nice! Would make a great commuter car, but I probably couldn't afford to run one :(

Someone tell me it's 25mpg and I'm done.

Thanks!

Probably nearer 30 to be honest

depends how much of a lead foot you have, but in a heavier ZX I got a consistent 32 without trying, DCC was getting similar with throttle bodies on his 205, more shouldn't be difficult, I'm getting a consistent 34-35 from an old 8 valver.

p.s, mine was running PH2's but not mapped to suit.

mid 30s when i had my gti6 on bodies, im hoping a gti6 engine in a 205 would be abit better because of the lighter shell

Used to get around the 40 mark in my xsara without too much effort, and thats with a 5 speed box. Could easily make it 20-25 if i wanted to though.

Well I'm getting 38 from my DTurbo, sitting at about 70 on the roads to work.

I think I'll get 50+ if I go HDi, which is great.

But if I can get nearly 40 then as petrol is cheaper I could do a GTi-6 conversion. Even if I had to sit at 60mph the whole way it'd be worth it just for the odd overtake/at the lights moment.

Anyone else please?

I get dead on 30mpg at the moment but I've not had it long, so I'm still enjoying it.

1.9 or even the GTI-6 gearboxes will help.

from what I remember of a PSCUK member telling me about his STDT, the gearbox is silly short, get a 306 or 405 DT box on there and the MPG will improve dramatically as they're a bit longer.

but yeah, a good 16v petrol should be able to get mid to high 30's easily if its healthy.

or just get some veg oil in there.

You're right gearing making a big difference, I hoped I could sit at 1500rpm-2000rpm with a GTi6 lump and get the economy that way.

35 happilly with a 6speed in mine. Genrally smooth driving with the odd blat. I have no doubt I could get 40 on a long run at 55-60 mph.

It's not really any different to the 306 TD gearbox, or atleast certainly my STDT wasn't - around 25mph/1000rpm in 5th IIRC.

If you're only getting 38mpg from a 205 TD then either there's something wrong with it or you're driving it hard as you should be getting 45+ from it! Certainly driving it in the manner or environment that you must be to be getting that sort of economy on a 1.8 TD would likely be well below 30 mpg with a GTi-6 engine I'd say.

Well I think it's a combo of my driving and the car not being what it should be, I've put smrs on it and the fuel economy instantly dropped, so I reduce the tyre to a 185 and it was a bit better. I replaced the battery yesterday as mine was knackered, although I don't know if that'll make any difference. I used to get 50mpg, but since the wheels I don't seem to :(

This tank I won't go above 60 and I'll see what that returns. Looks like a GTi-6 is out the window as a commuter, boooo.

Thank you guys

I'd choose a standard '6 as a daily!! I've got bodies on mine and I'm quite lead footed still at the monent, with a trip down to Brighton from Maidstone and back, I'm gonna get about 280 miles from this tank. But like I say, I do have a tendency to press the loud pedal quite hard quite a lot lol

You guys aren't helping!

Here you go, a little comparison of how mpg is affecting my wallet, I do 13k a year in my 205. Some might argue with that mileage I should be loving every second, but as I've a house to renovate I can't throw the money away so easily at the moment.

Going from a petrol doing 30mpg I spend £2620 a year, to a diesel doing 50mpg I'll spend £1650, so save myself about a grand each year. This £1k would keep all 350bhp of my Z on the road for free.

For now I think the 6 is out the window, and one day I'll build a weekend car, IRS, TBs, seam welded, lightened everything, the whole package... one day .... :)

But then on the flip side, I'm only getting 38mpg at the moment, for an extra £450 a year in fuel I could be driving a 6!!!

ARRRRGHHH! I want to punch myself in the face.

I think the best bet is see what the next tank returns and go from there.

If the forum admin will allow me to attach xlsx files I'll share the spreadsheet.

You're thinking about it too much

You also have to get the money for the engine and parts for the conversion from somewhere. So that's several hundred before you even see the decrease in MPG.

+ insurance and extra tyre usage .... I'd love to come up against some of the noisy jap cars on Toneway though in a five and blow them away :D

I quit! You guys enjoy yourself, give me a wave when you overtake.

38-40ish MPG on a run.

I find mine quite economical really, but then a 205 is a lightweight car so it should be reasonable.

Are GTi6s OK to run on 95 then? If not, you'll have to consider the extra cost for super-duper fuel.

My Mi16 on a 1.6 box used to get 32mpg, and that was a b-road blast drive to work (without getting silly). I'm sure a 6's better management and a careful foot will net you a higher return!

i run mine on 95 and have never had a problem.

They have suitable management to run 95 of course.

If pn aftermarket, mapped well it could well be better on fuel than standard.

My cammed 205 GTi6 with ITBs mapped on a DTA S40 Pro with standard 15 inch SMR alloys got 28-32 MPG on my usual daily drive (28 in wintertime, 32 in summertime). On long distance runs when it had standard intake (i.e. no ITBs) it would do over 40mpg. I never tested long distance runs with the ITBs on.
