Changing Gti6 Water Pump

Recommended Posts

andyjstone

The water pump on the '6 lump in my 205 decided to dump all the water on the track at the end of a day at Brands Hatch a couple of weeks ago, it looks a bit tight in there, is there anything I should know before I tackle it?

yeah, replace the belt kit too :)

use a tiny smear of sealant on the gasket to make it stick in place.

Do some research on NOT moving the cams too far with the belt off to time them up ;)

And do not trust the timing hole on the crank pulley without verifying that it lines up before removing the old belt. Many people have bent valves timing up unknowingly using a slipped crank pulley.

As Welshpug said, replace the cambelt as a matter of course - it's a false economy not to on a GTi-6.

Take the engine out!?

I jest, but it is bloody tight in there so always take the chance when the engine is out!

Ali's right I think, if you can, it might be quicker to do that!

Knowing how clean your car is it should come apart quickly, depends if there's any other work needs doing, and whether you have a crane.

If not take it out, dropping it in situe a few inches would make hell of a difference.
