Probably Stupid Question Thermostat Housing

Recommended Posts

pug205rally

Hi,

The casing just behind the thermostat housing on my 205 GTI has developed a small leak - a fracture in the metal by one of the bolt heads connecting the casing to the block byt the heater hose outlet.

I've found the leak by removing the hoses and the dizzy but now I've done this I want to see if this casing can be simply be removed or is it a move involved job - am ok at the basics but if I need to remove the cam etc. I might need to seek some assistance

Any thoughts appreciated

I assume you mean the part pictured below?

The full thermostat housing can be removed without taking the cam etc out once the cooling system is drained, which it sounds like you've done already.

You'll loose a small amount of oil but not much when you remove it.

The housing is held on by seven bolts, 6 x 11mm head M7 x 1 bolts & 1 M7 allen head bolt with a copper washer under its head thats hidden by the dizzy when fitted.

There is a gasket between the housing & head, part number 1340.08.

Thanks for the prompt reply - Mines a pre 90 one on the left of the images you posted - Great news it cam simply be removed - will save a whole heap of ballache - just need to source a new housing and gasket and crack on

Cheers

Simon

Anthony

If you get stuck and can't find one locally, I've got a spare early thermostat housing 25 miles or so down the road from you in Swindon :)

Pretty much as Graham says though, with just one other comment to make which is to sure you mark the position of the dizzy so that you can refit it in the same place and not mess up the ignition timing. RTV sealant will suffice in place of a gasket too, just make sure that the surfaces are clean and allow it to set fully before filling with fluids and starting the engine.

I've got as couple of housings here minus the thermostat cap going cheap, gaskets aren't expensive from pug either but as Anthony says,.RTV is a suitable alternative.
