Gauging Interest On Selling New Unused 205 Shell

Recommended Posts

JamesLumley

Hi All,

Haven't been on here for a while but having a bit of a clear up of my various 205 bits and need to decide what to do with my new shells.

Some of you will know that I still have a new factory gti shell and have no intention of selling that so please don't ask.

However I also have a new std 205 non sunroof shell - again still sat in original factory primer with the barcodes on. It has a little dint in the roof which I'm sure can be pulled out but other than that it's mint - as it left the factory all those years ago. I bought it a couple of years ago from a friend and it's been dry stored since.

Being a std shell it would need the rear arches cutting to fit gti arch trim/wheels but I think that's the only difference.

Would be perfect for someone looking to start a ground up rebuild or build a competition car.

My question is what is a fair price to ask for it?

I'd much rather it went to an enthusiast in the community rather than some rudeboy who wants to stick a body kit and 20in wheels on it.

It's in storage at present so I need to go and take some pictures in the next few weeks and then put it up for sale.

Cheers

James

i wouldnt know how to price a brand new complete shell but if you could ( in theory ) build a brand new car using it and other brand new parts its not going to be a cheap item!

having said that because it will need modifying and re rustproofing to use as a gti due to the body additions and then taking the logistics of transporting it without damaging it further in to account it wont be just the purchase price any buyer has to consider.

so as said above although its undoubtably a rare and desirable item it will only ever be worth what someone who really needs it is willing to pay and who could guess what that would be?

Being something that doesn't come up for sale often, it's hard to know what people would be willing to pay.

There is a 'risk' you may advertise it actually too cheap, or beyond it's value to who is looking at that time. It's not something everyone can buy on a whim and store.

There is a buyer out there, but whether they notice it for sale, or want it now is another thing.

You really have to weight up how much it owes you, and what you would ideally like to see from it. If it doesn't sell you can always lower your price to what it is worth to someone.

I think you will struggle to hear a firm 'it's worth XXX'. It will probably end in a case of 'I sold it for XXX last year, could have got more as another sold for XYZ yesterday'. But again, it's not something that really comes up to be able to look for what it went for.

All a lot of us on here can do is pull figures from the air, so don't get too hung up on people saying 'probably a bit more than a mint used GTi shell goes for'.

Presumably you want top dollar. If you have any sort of figure in your head then list it at that and really just see what happens.

Dont horde them too long I am sure they will be remanufactured in the next 10 years in the style of the minis and escorts that escalated in price as I would expect / hope 205s will do too.

I was offered a brand new shell about 5 years ago that was stored in a container and turned it down for £900 (gti shell) for storage reasons only. havent regretted it yet!!!

Be a struggle to register it unless you rehshelled a car into it as if you tried to register it today it would need to pass current emissions....

not at all, it'd just go on a Q plate unless you did the usual of transferring all parts, inc vin plate...

I will look forward to seeing some pictures but to me it a bit of a novelty thing owning a brand new 205 body shell and it will just keep being past on and on, every one has a good idea on what they would do with it if they brought it but that's what all the other owners of it have thought and the more it gets sold on the more it gets knocked about and then a rolling shell with a ID can be brought for less money.

I have got a good friend ho owns RS cosworth breakers and he is all ways buying brand new 3 door sierra cosworth shells and brand new escort cosworth shell and there is big business in Ford cosworths even more now for the 3 door sierra's as every one is getting into racing the old rs500 touring cars again.

Any way I hope some one buys it and makes a brand new mint 205 with brand new parts but as some of us knows brand new parts are thinning down now and I don't think that will happen at the moment.

Is it completely VIN-less?

If so, and I was building a new rally car, I would dread the ballache of SVA to be honest. If it's got a VIN on it, and it was 18 months ago when I was looking for a shell, I'd have paid £1000 for it, no worries. For the lack of need to be worrying about rust and sandblasting, it's worth it to me. If it's VIN-less, I'm not sure I'd even bother - depends on the challenges of registering it. Or is it straightfoward to get it without a Q plate? Just giving you an honest answer!

For £500 you can pick up a very tidy complete base model car which have the bonus of coming with wings, doors, tailgate etc and may not even need painting depending on what your doing with it.

To put genuine panels and paint a brand new shell you'll be looking at well over £1000 to do a decent job.

I'd love to build a car from a brand new shell but the numbers just don't add up for me, I'd personally only pay around £300 for it if I was in the market for one.

I'd stash it away somewhere and forget about it ;)

I offered 500 as I'd reshell my rallye and set the clocks to zero as the engine will be rebuilt

Hi all,

Thanks for the feedback, I am heading up to see it over the weekend so will grab some pics.

It is completely vin less so easiest plan would be to stamp an existing number onto the scuttle and pop rivet the I'd plate onto the suspension turret before cutting up the old shell it was replacing. Perfectly legit and how it is done with new heritage shells on minis etc.

I was told a few years ago that if built with a very large percentage of parts it could theoretically be registered on a new plate as a new car but would be a massive undertaking and not sure if the rules have changed in the last 3-4yrs to prevent that.

I reckon it will go to someone building a high spec race/rally car, I spent a small fortune on my replacement rally car shell having it blasted and prepped, removing rust etc so in hindsight I should have probably used one of my new shells instead.

Cheers

James

I agree, I think that's where you'll get the interest. Put it on some relevant forums or contact some prep places who might have customers waiting for something like this.

If stamping a repeat VIN on it is fine, that makes it much easier than I thought. Or like you say, if you can provide receipts proving you've built it with new parts you can register it as brand new, and they will then assign you a VIN. It used to work on a points system; not sure how it works these days. That would be very cool, driving round in a 61 plated 205 :D

It used to be 75% of original parts didn't it?

I remember reading an article about this in practical classics.

If I buy it and was to register it as a new car could I have it registered as a rallye or would it be just 205 as my rallye docs say 205 rallye special

Decided to finally head up to my long term storage today so I could check out the shell.

It's not looking too bad considering I haven't seen it for around 5 years!

Looks a bit dusty/grubby but I can sort that with some panel wipe. There are a couple of dints in the roof - near side towards the rear but apart from that I'd say it's pretty good.

Also discovered that I've got a couple of unused gti front wings to go with it - not sure if they're genuine or pattern but sat in a box along side it.
