Mi16's Die And S16's Don't...

You can't fit an 86mm crank in an alloy block without modifications. S16 after 11/93 has a windage tray.

what in the S16 bottom end is inferior to the gti6? given its the same crank+block?

Ok, the shell on my number two rod spun yesterday on a sprint up some hills, but at no point did I see any pressure drop, oil light came on at idle immediately after I heard the knock and pulled to the side, so it's working fine.

This is the 3rd crank and shell I loose so I phoned a guy that's been racing Mi16 205s for 7 years and has been leading the championship for pretty much the same time and he had a good laugh at me and told me he lost 3 engines the same way and that since then he has ground the crank 0.05 mm more than standard, used high quality shells, Motul 300V oil, no oil cooler, no 6 bar spring, only thing he does have is a baffle plate. So no issues in this configuration for 6 years on tarmac rallies and circuit racing on full slicks, wide track, rally suspension.

So just as B1ack_Mi16 said, it may just be the issue of increasing tolerances. My crank is at the machinist now, will grind it to 49.70 with 0.25 bearings and give it another go. If it doesn't work I'm setting the car on fire and buying a Honda.

UNARICIFLOCOS, this new clearence works fine?

UNARICIFLOCOS, this new clearence works fine?

My latest setup that works is a Diesel crank, the Diesel shells(used),sump baffle and overfilling the sump with one liter of oil.

I think my previous problem was caused by an ovaled rod.

On my latest build that I've raced and has lasted well I have measured and rectified each and every component to see that it was true and within spec.

I know people will cringe at the thought of shells that had already done several hundreds of thousands of kilometres, but they were perfect and with availability of new shells only from dodgy manufacturers it was my preferred solution.

Did anyone ever determine if the XUD9 had a different crank oil gallery route from the Mi16's (1.9)?

I've raced on 2nd hand mains bearings. Never a problem. They never seem to wear out. I always use renew rod bearings however, as they seem to take an absolute hammering after a season of racing.

Heat also speeds up the process. Hot thin oil isn't particularly useful. The more you can do to keep the oil cooler, also the better. ie cooler, increased capacity etc.

What oil are people using too?? At the end of the day cheap s*ite chipshop oil aint gonna lubricate a nun's.

I am thinking of using castrol edge 10w60 have used in past magnatec 5w40 and a fully synthetic 10w40 msport oil from a local shell oils blender.
