When Is A 205 Not A 205?

Recommended Posts

after reading about the 205 evo project where someone said they didnt think it was a 205 anymore, when does a 205 become something else? or stop being a 205?

is it when you fit a mi16,gti6,turbo engine etc,or is it when you bolt on a 309 rear beam or fit bigger brakes?

all the above things change the car and how it feels and goes so does this mean its not a 205 anymore?

just wondering where you draw the line

The line is drawn by the DVLA with their 8 points system, various parts are allocated a certain number of points and you need to retain at least 8 points from the original car or you lose the right to registration as the original model. The Evo project wont score 8 points as a 205 or an Evo and would be considered a cut and shut so needs to go through a IVA/SVA/ESVA test a bit like a kit car. Once it passes it would be allocated a Q plate and the owner can choose a manufacturer name and model for the V5 but from what I understand it cant be a trademark so needs to be original.

I think that as long as it still has the 205's silhouette, it's a 205.

My project will still be a 205 as far as I'm concerned, I don't care what anyone else says. :D

This is going to be blasphemy to some people - But to me a 205 is a lightweight shopping hatch with a small engine. A fun 205 is a lightweight slightly stiffened, lowered 205 with a small revvy engine and snappy on the limit handling.

As soon as we start putting massive brakes on them and big heavy 2.0 engines, they start moving away from my 'ideal' vision of a 205.

Even my 205 is not what I think a 205 should be really - Its got a cast iron 1.6 engine in it, when in fact it should be a nice light revvy alloy 1.3 or 1.4. Lots of revs and a not too much power make for a fun car :-)

The proper 1.3 TU24 to me is the ultimate 205. It might not be the fastest thing in a straight line, but that buzzy, revvy little engine and lovely steering and handling get close to what a true 'hot hatch' should be.

Now class, in conclusion, when is a 205 not a 205? Well, when its got more than about 130bhp, weighs more than 900kg and has big brakes (i.e GTi-6), has an engine bigger than 1.9 litres (Preferably 1.6 or smaller!) and is trying to be something it's not!

Now, having in mind I have just alienated most forum here, I shall bow out and await the flaming :-)

I agree about the small engine thing, makes me glad to have a 1.6! :D

Disagree on everything else though. :P

Engine size is no issue to me as long as its not a turbo and revs.

Chassis should be broadly as it came out the factory too IMHO, Other wise your just building 205 shaped a kit car.......

Weight should be <800kg

I might change my thread title to "Ultimate 205-Shaped Kit Car" then. :P

Except I don't know of anywhere that makes one in kit form.. how about "Ultimate 205-Shaped Custom Engineered Race Car"?

It does not really matter what engine is in it. Its a true 205 as long as the chassis is there imo

Camerons is going to be a silhouette racer but it will look like a 205 so you might as well call it a 205 even though theres hardly going to be a 205 part on it.

The 205 T16 is called a 205 by most and thats only because Peugeot marketing department made it vaguely look like one.....

Sounds to me like some people have never had a decent engine in a 205, just because an engine has bigger pistons and produces more power it isn't then a 205....

Sounds similar to the old Id rather have a 8v 205 over a gti6 engine as its more torquey.....

Good point, the T-16 was not a standard 205 by any stretch of the imagination!

Even the homologated road-going ones were nothing like it.

But they came out before the 205 road cars, so which one isn't a 205?

True,

But given it was given the "205" name by Peugeot and that makes it a std 205 albeit a "std rally car" LOL

Much the same as the 6R4, Delta S4 etc etc

Any change to a car makes it less like the original and at some point it is so far removed it is now something unique. Jack Herer's post says the DVLA has already had a discussion on this and written some rules and guidelines on it.

As fo the T16; it's not a 205 really, is it? Engine is in the middle, driving 4 wheels, chassis is mostly spaceframe. I think only the doors and lights are common with our 205s - hell there's more common parts on a Citroen Visa!

It is a Peugeot 205 if it says it on the log book. If it breaches the DVLA definition then it is whatever you want to call it. What you are now discussing is what is the spirit of a "traditional 205". Anything non-standard is a step away from that. Personally I think the 1.6 is more representative than the 1.9 of the 205 ethos
