Getting Bored With My 205.... Random Thoughts...

Recommended Posts

madspikes

Just thinking out loud!

Ok, most people know of my supercharged 205 - Home built 1.9GTI with an Eaton 45 supercharger installed.

First things first I love driving it, open the taps and it just takes off. I think I'm just getting a little fed up of explaining to non car people why it makes the noise it does, and the fact it looks like a right sh**ter in its stain black paint. Maybe at my age I want something I can polish... but still goes well. There is no way I could justify putting it into the body shop... and I would guess that my GTI wouldn't be worth much if I sold it, and would be worth more in parts... As I've had 8+ years I think it would break my heart to sell it... or break to sell...

I cant justify having it as a weekend car...

Have been toying with GTI6'ing it, or an EW conversion... but that doesn't solve the paint issue.

Oh, what to do...

Mad.

Bummer mate! :(

Not as easy to swap/repair a pug beam, compared to the lump of steel on a Nova!

How fubar is it, just one side or both? There are a few members on here that refurb / supply 'new' beams, which is always an option - might even take your existing beam in part-ex. That's if you can be arsed

Im knackers deep in it so i'll have to be arsed lol

One side isnt seized but is stiff, with a jack in the centre of the beam the pass side can be pulled down slowly and the drivers side is almost sat on the bumpstop and will not budge whastsoever!!

Gutted,99% done (oh how silly of me to think that lol) and i found that.

I just laid on my garage floor smoking for 10 mins thinking haha

Well, I've spent the last few evening changing the steering rack and doing brakes... Quite enjoyed really, after day trying to get computers to work right!! The works normally, just the MOT man has take issues with a few bits, which could happen with any oldish car.

I have thought about the re-shelling thing, but it find a good shell for the right price - I'd probably take about a year to do it!!!

On the plus side I don't care about the current body work, so parking dents, going to the tip dont bother me. Oh and today, whist I was at work and the car was on the drive on stands the "boys" (my two sons 4years and 2years) have been having great fun "washing" it... Using paint brushes, water and sand... My wife said it kept them happy for ages!!!

well if like most of the rest of you have been bitten by the 205 gti bug selling wont be an option so thats out!

on a paintwork level though whats wrong with restoring the body to as near standard as possible? then you will have the ultimate street sleeper! ( to those who dont hear you coming 1st at least lol! ) :)

How bad is the paintwork? Is it a matter of, if you dont like the paintwork at all, why not try and paint it yourself if you have nothingf to loose? If you totsly cock it up you can always flat it back and try again/satin black again!

I did the stain black last year with rattle cans, I have thought about spending a little more time and trying to do it gloss white with rattle cans...

I changed the exhaust as well at the weekend, not straight forward as had to add a lambda sensor boss... I changed from a totally shagged to standard system (one of the very few original parts left on the car from when I bought it 8+ years ago) to a much newer standard system... Before it sound very tinny, now it rumbles, and sounds mean.

painting a car is not as hard as people think, its all about patience and prep,90% prep i wold say, there's loads of info and videos on you tube etc.

you could do it your self in a couple of weeks easily in your own garage,

i will be painting mine next weekend hopefully, at home in a shed i reckon i have saved about 2 grand and so far anyone that's seen it cant believe how good its looking and that's just in primer!

If you are confident enough to go for painting it in rattle cans then you should be more than up to the job of getting a compressor and gun and doing it properly. To be honest its probably easier painting with a gun than it is with a can. So long as you've a decent eye for where you have put the paint (lots of lighting helps) and you can see where your wet edge is, there is no reason you can't do a good job. A compressor can be hired if you don't want to buy one.

chin up - don't let a few shallow minded idiots comments erode your reasons for doing things, unless you know it's not for you any more, in which case listen to the guys above and get on with a respray!!

i seriously considered that, or blue... would cost circa 500 plus prep, i also know two guys who can do it, one did the v expensive wrapping course.

Go on! Paint it yourself! can always pick up some bolt on panels and start with them ? Once you have doors, bonnet and hatch done (wings too, maybe? ) you're not left with that much to do and can do the rest with the old panels unbolted. Great feeling when you get it looking smart for about £100 :)

Camo it! You've already got the black, just need a bit of green and brown.
