Starter Motor Fault ?

Recommended Posts

scott-205gti

My 205 has now developed a starting fault . Every so often ( and getting more frequent now ) it will not start .That is to say the starter motor does not turn the engine .All you get is a clunk and on one occasion every time you tried to start it all the electrics went dead .By rocking the car back and forward it will eventually start .This is as I say an intermittent fault .I have convinced myself that it is the starter motor .It seems from the Haynes manual a pain to change .That is to say it requires removing the Inlet manifold .However some say taking the Rad out is easier .Having looked at it this seems to be the case .From what I have read there are two sizes of Starter fitted .Are they interchangeable ? Again I have seen it stated that the smaller unit is more reliable .Mine appears to be the larger one .There is one currently on Ebay for £20.00 and I was considering this .Does anyone agree that a duff starter is more likely ? When it does start it does so with no problem .Thanks .

bad earth, dodgey engine bay multiplug, potentially scrap starter motor.

Start off with a 'engine bay brown multiplug' search. Should do for now

Are the battery terminals tightly attached to the battery and in good condition?

Had this problem couple of weeks ago rewired my earths and new battery terminals didn't fix it so I stole my dads spare 306 xsi starter and it starts on first turn of key but I'd look at earths and terminals first mate as they're cheaper than a starter
