Powder Coating Hubs

Looking for advice from anyone who has ever had front hubs powdercoated. I've got a pair to have done for one of my cars, I've had them blasted and removed the old bearings.

 

Just wondering what you can do about covering the surfaces that do not want coating on them, e.g. bearing bore etc? I am not worried about any threads as I can easily tap these out afterwards.

The place we take stuff too (gary bevans) masks up any bits you don't want coating. We never bother blasting stuff either as they will re-blast it anyway.

I did a few days years ago in a powder coating factory, just masking tape and rubber bungs was all that was used :)

 

Might be different these days as it was a while ago, I;d ask the guy's doing the coating.

I had mine powdercoated with the sub frame and about 30-40 other bits such as the slam panel, air filter box, antiroll bar and other brackets, which came to £90

I even had the steel casting of the calipers coated. I had to buy a pantagon socket to remove and refit them.

The company I used do all the masking up, they use a aluminium tape on external threads, rolled up old newspapers bunged in any holes or use an old bolt to plug threads.

 

If it's not an obvious part that can be identified easily, you'd have to tell them where you don't want powder coating, but the powder coating guys see stuff like hubs all the time, so you should be ok.

Guy who does all my powder coating uses some form of tape iirc just run of the mill masking tape but im not 100%

If that's not a trolling post i dont know what is :lol:

 

Its a well known 'fact' that water/corrosion will get behind powder-coating which hides the corrosion, especially if they get chipped and cant really be rectified.

 

Ask your friend Matt to use some of his 2k epoxy primer and 2k paint, it will last far longer and might be cheaper for you too.

 

I think powder coating inside the hub would be like what can happen when powder-coating wheels, where the wheel meets the brake disk it can chip/come away and leave a small gap which results in the wheel coming loose. So yes its best not to powder coat the inside the bearing holes.

I don't remember asking for advice on the powder coating as a material?

 

In any case I have already dropped them off, I've been more than happy with the finish before, and will be again I'm sure.

No you didn't, my 1st reply was to the quote and then i started talking about the question you did ask.

 

Im not sure if the shock fitting loop should be powder coated either but im sure the powder coaters will sort them out well enough for you if they are worth their salt ?

what the powder coaters use will depend on what service they provide.

Where I work we use a heavy duty tape - its like plastic.

 

It has to survive a chemical wash, clean and a bake dry before powder coating and the final bake

place is use just uses copper grease stops the powder coat sticking and you just wipe it off.

Yeah, place I use just tapes things off with kapton tape if you ask them.

 

And water getting behind powdercoating is usually only a problem if you've been a cheap-ass and had them put the topcoat straight on with no primer/surface coating beforehand...

So here they are in the evil powder coat, if you look carefully you can see it coming away in massive flakes already......

The pictures don't really show it very well, it isn't full gloss as that would be a bit much, but it us a bit shinier than satin. £30 to have both uprights, both wheel hubs and the subframe done, dropped off Thursday picked up Friday, bargain in my eyes considering the amount of time money effort and mess it would have been at home to try and get a similar standard of finish.

Very tidy gaffer! Decent price too, that'd of been £50-£60 at our place! Is it somewhere through work?

 

Shame about the flaking but that's powder coating for you :P

Look very smart! No smartening up your lazer too much! :P You already have the upper hand yours being original!

 

Ive got a little pot of black enamel paint for touching up powdercoat, seems to work fine, and keep the rust/destruction/flakes at bay ;)

Al, it's just a local place, I've used them before to have my gates of all things done! Price I thought was good too, but, they only do coating, no blasting, so you have to have the bits blasted elsewhere before you take them in.

Craig, fear not, I've some way to go before I am even approaching your standard!
