Old, Abandoned American Muscle Cars

Recommended Posts

Thought you guys might appreciate this... :)

I'm currently cycling from Canada to Mexico and have noticed the sad abundance of abandoned, yet utterly awesome machinery left in peoples yards in British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon. Soooo eventually I stopped and shot this...

Sad state of affairs eh?

It's such a shame that great cars just get left to the elements but I can't take on another project  The good lady would kill me......

You see this kind of thing all the time in the US. People buy a car, park it up because it needs some trivial problem fixing, and then leave it to rot for 30 years with dreams of fixing it "one day" - which of course never comes. People also park cars in barns, woodland, or remote corners of large farms and then literally forget they own them.

They're usually really reluctant to sell them too, even when someone turns up with a wad of cash. They think "well it worked when I parked it three decades ago, so all it needs is a new battery and a polish and it'll be worth $20k again".

Yep, I had a neighbour in a town I lived who had an Audi Quattro on axle stands for over 12 years and every time I went round to offer him money, he turned it down. The thing I always found fascinating was the fact that the rot was getting worse infront of his very eyes but he always said, its just a little hole that I can deal with and it started 5 years ago, so the engine will be sound etc etc.

I bet its still there now getting worse.

Is this unique to the US? I'm sure (as others have mentioned) there are plenty examples of cars left in the UK. Only our climate means that rot is even more aggressive and our cars weren't great to start with. Imagine a late 60s MG in a field, 50 years on all that would be left is the glass.

Not to say it isn't sad - just a 'stang in a beautiful forest makes a better picture than a Capri on blocks parked up outside a lock up!

What is more interesting is...where did the idea come from for you to CYCLE just over 1700 miles?

Are you cycling back or going by train?

Why the hell not? :) It's a great way to see a country, and it's also ridiculously cheap - no transport and no accommodation costs (camping, Couchsurfing, and using Warmshowers). It's been a brilliant experience, and now I'm hitchhiking through Mexico - which is also freaking great, until the police come along in the morning to ask you why you're camping on the beach in the middle of downtown La Paz

If you're interested in more I write a lot - been chronicalling it all here - www.benallen.ca

Ah that'll be a great trip - be sure to check out Santa Cruz on your way up, and Big Sur. Plenty to see and do in that area. Have you got time to check out Yosemite? Utterly spectacular scenery.

Enjoy the blog - always nice to have more readership :)
