205 Won't Start Even On Jumpleads

I have left it for 3 - 4 weeks, battery completely flat - have had it on a trickle charge then on jump leads - unable to start.

All the lights come on when turning the key but on the 3rd turn just a buzz and the rev counter hovers around up to 3k ( with the engine off obviously ) .

 

In the past I have had trouble starting it but usually when warm and by 3rd attempt she would fire up.

 

The only thing i can think of is it has a Clifford Eagle on it, maybe the battery running flat has immobilized the car?

 

Edit> I should also mention that when turning anything on such as lights or indicators the buzzing happens and the rev counter jumps

Battery is dead, give it more of a charge and you may be lucky and it may perk up enough to work, or you may find no matter how much you charge it, its knackered.

Surely the jump leads would counteract the dead battery situation??

I was going to say starter motor knackered but the lights on and hovering rev counter puts a null to that...

Thanks , I will try a long charge at the weekend when I can keep an eye on it so far just tried charging for an hour and jump leads that got a bit "smokey joe" after a few attempts.

I used to have this problem on a different car with leads that were a bit too thin and weedy... Either get a good heavy duty set of leads, or if you have a second set of leads use them too... That was what I used to do lol

These started a colleagues car a few months ago but anyway looking at them..... they are very 1978 looking - I found them in my late Grandad's garage.

Off on a tangent here completely but what is the bonnet liner made from? I swear I saw some fibourous looking material sticking out round the edges :o:excl:

No. The dead cells will just pull the jump battery down. The symptoms described are classic shagged battery on a 205.

My local Texaco garage with a Spar shop does them bigger and cheaper... Look local and see what you can find, but they'll probably do the trick...

Never knew that... Always thought the current would flow straight into the wiring strongly.

also how are you connecting the leads?

if you have gone positive to postive and negetive to negative this wont help.

you should go postive to positive then negative on the good battery to a earth on the car with the flat battery.this way you by pass the dead battery so giving more power to the dead car.it also stop s you spiking a ecu.

My first step would be to remove the battery and give it a "proper" charge over night then try it again.. If that dosent work id get my self down to the local motorfactors and get a new battery.

Did you have the jump car's engine running when you tried to start the 205?

 

That way you have a guaranteed ~14V across the battery, rather than the 8-9V (or less) you'll get from just using the battery on it's own. For the record you should always have the engine running on the jump car.

Disconnect the knackered battery entirely and just try to start it from the jump leads. The poorly battery will be sapping the jump current like a sponge also put the earth clamp on a lifting hook/eye on your engine rather than the negative terminal.

If you've had it on trickle charge and it's still dead then it doesn't sound hopeful for that battery.

 

However, I have never yet failed to jump a car off a decent set of jump leads, no matter how dead the battery is. The key word there is decent, as you need jump leads capable of carrying enough current to operate the starter directly, and there's no chance that a set of typical cheap leads from the petrol station are going to do that.

on my old car when it had a dying battery, I used to run a cable straight from the battery to the starter for a few seconds if I couldnt get enough charge to start it off the key, then charge off the alternator

Got my trusty Sigma 6 charger connected up, No indicator lights on the charger for when battery is fully charged. The battery is a 2 year old or less Bosch S5 silver plus.

Will give it a good charge and post back tomorrow.

Bosch S5 silver plus.

That could be partly the issue. My experience of Bosch Silver batteries is that they really don't take kindly to being fully discharged.
