Is There A Diffrence Between A 205 1.6 Beam And 1.9?

Recommended Posts

i thought all 205 gti beams where the same [apart from disc/drums] and if you wanted a bit wider track you fitted a 309 beam.but while shopping saw a 205 feature in a car magazine and it said that the 1.6 beam was diffrent.is this true and if so whats diffrent?

The only difference between a 1.6 and a 1.9 beam is one has drums and one has disks and the slight difference in track width is as a result of that. The tube, torsion bars, arb and arms are the same. Very early 1.6 beams had different amount of splines on the torsion bars and arms iirc? but tbh these days thats not really an issue as there isnt many of those around!

Drum stub axles are different, a bit shorter, other than the smaller splines James mentioned on very early 1.6 beams, and the mounts Graham mentions they'll be the same

Track widths were different due to the narrower and different offset wheels as well as drum/disk variation.

My 1.6 CTi beam has thinner torsion bar shafts and ARB than my 1.9 Gti had. The ARB end plates are thinner too.

In fact The whole of the suspension on my CTi is more like the 1.4 XS than a GTi.
