Torsion Bar Setting, Standard Ride Height

You really need to have the bits that the other end of the shocks attach to (the rear "legs" of the beam tube for a better word) and measure between the two shock mounting holes to set it accurately - should be 322mm between shock bolt holes for GTi spec (18.9mm) torsion bars at standard height.

The bar at the other end (behind) was marked up and is back in exactly as it came out.

The other two possible positions on the splines leaves a bigger gap one way, and hits the beam tube the other way.

Really you need to do it as Anthony describes. Doing it your way you risk it not being equal side to side. As you've done a lovely job of refinishing the beam it would be a shame not to set it up right now.

Im confident that thats how it was before,

I just thought Id check on here because looking at the two other possibilites they seems obviously wrong.

 

I tried the measurement tequnique on my last beam rebuild and could'nt get an acurate reading as the spring from the torsion when relaxed had a variable reading, a small degree of movement exagerates the shock centre measurement.

You need to decide on your measurement, lock the trailing arm at that point with a dummy damper or length of timber with two holes drilled in it, and then insert the bars. But if you are happy with your way that is all that matters.

is the 322mm measurement taken with the wheel off and no shock in place, I did mine at that and it seems high?!

Nearly, its done with the dummy damper in place, so no weight dangling against the torsion bar.

Is that measurement from the centre of each hole?
