It depends on where you decided to take it for its mot though ?

1) Brakes N pipes

2) Handbrake

3) Emissions like what mine always seems to fail on

4) Rust

Put it this way just hope your axle aint dead like mine was last month and failed MOT because of it.

A bit o/t but i purchased a car recently with the nearside wing mirror glass missing! It had been recently m.o.t'd like this as it was mentioned on the 'advisory' section!!Suprised the way things are now what constitutes an advisory and what is an outright fail!!

You need 2 rear facing mirrors, drivers side and interior is acceptable.

you dont need a nearside wing mirror at all ;)

THE RESULTS ARE IN!!

drum roll please.....

FAILED! (of course)

all annoying things:

front left brake binding slightly (never had this problem until it started doin it on the way home from work yesterday. grr)

inadequate exhaust mount (forgot to change the knackered rubber bit on one side of the back box hanger)

divers side rear wheel too close to bodywork (in my haste to change the rear beam mounts for the mot, I havent lined the beam up centrally)

pinch bolt on drivers suspension strut/hub not fully tightened (Only thing I can think here is ive either stripped the bolt thread or somehow ovalled it?)

Only thing I'm concerned about is the binding caliper, Which i have a spare, and I'm just hoping the hubs not ovalled somehow, I've got one of those spare too so no big deal, just waiting for a call back to see if they'll sort it for a decent price, if not I'll have the spanners out later!

Is a binding caliper likely to be the seals or just a sticky pad?

Scratch that, after speaking to the other bloke there, He has said there's excessive play in the beam.

new beam time then!

WANK!

You'll be able to find a cheap base model beam for ~£50. Caliper just needs the slider cleaning and re-greasing!

pop the piston completely out then pop out the piston seal and clean it all up its always crap in the inner seal that causes binding unless your pad carriers are severely corroded then a good wire brushing wont hurt as well

question with a cheap beam, is whether itll be any better than the one on there at the moment. A refurbed beam was on my list of things to do after the engine swap, looks like I may need to change my plans!

of course the problem now is that I dont have any transport after tomorrow. joy!

Thats right, legally it doesn't matter which mirrors you have as long as there are two of them.

Where did you take it ?

and buying a second hand rear beam isnt always the best option they are a commen problem ive bought 2 rear beams and both callapsed after 2 years. If id only bought a refurbed one from day one i might have saved some money.

Just keep that in mind

Quick update on this:

fully refurbed beam was sorted out courtesy of Tom Fenton (cheers!)

exhaust mounts changed

caliper as mentioned above it just needed popping out, wiping all the dried up dust off it and a quick clean, regrease and slide in and out a few times and seems good to go :)

shock mount bolts replaced (also courtesy of Mr Fenton) and double checked that they are tightened!

booked in for 10am tomorrow morning

sadly missed out on the partial retest deadline, so i'll have to cough up the full price, just hope they dont find something else that they didnt notice last time!

Fingers crossed buddy. You should notice a good difference now that beam has GTI bars in it. How is the ride height now it's on the car??

ride height is spot on tom :)

Good news.....

IT PASSED!!

definitely feels like it handles much better and feels much more precise now. I think a combination of the thicker bars, better shocks, solid mounts and no play in the bearings make for quite a transformation!
