Petrol Additives

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

Just wondered if anyone ever uses any sort of petrol additives to help with the running of their little pugs?

John

I don't know of any that would make any difference at all and don't see any need to unless its a very highly tuned race engine or a turbo engine pushing the limits of street fuel.

Standard Super unleaded seems to work just fine, you can use normal unleaded but the timing should be backed off a little to suit, you'll loose a marginal amount of torque economy etc.

Remember that these old engines were designed in the days of 4 star which was 97 octane, so nearer to the 98 SUL than the 95 UL, though the valve seats were thankfully made from hard enough material to cope with the lower lead levels of modern fuels unlike many older engine designs.

if you are having running issues your best approach would be to grab a download or hard copy of the haynes workshop manual and have a good read of the sections covering the Jetronic LE2 system, then having a work through with a multimeter, feeler blades screwdriver and if you can get one, a vacuum gauge (not absolutely necessary, you can get them very close without) checking the components and setting up from scratch.

This will most of the time eliminate idling and kangarooing issues, and restore fuel economy and power.

Tesco Momentum or Shell V Power for mine. It runs well on both ;-)

high power fuel does make a diffrence but in a standard 205 dont no

years ago i used to go to a flying club and in one of the hangers i found a old suzuki gt 185 2 stroke that had been left to rot.with a bit of messing i got it running and was used to run about the airfeild on.then a few of us decided to see who could go the fastest so a 1/4 strip was marked out and we timed each other with a stop watch.after a couple of runs each it ran out of fuel but sitting in a can was some aviation fuel [ think this was about 100% octane] so we used that and the bike felt faster and was faster as everyone did faster times.but the bike was designed to run on 2 star and was a 2 stroke.
