Tu Thermostat Housing Gasket And Sealant Question?

TU Experts,

This will be a simple one for you...I hope.

My TU thermostat housing has a temperature sender for the omex ignition system tapped into the underneath and it looks like the threads were sealed with something, don't know what it was. Anyway it has started to leak coolant from the sender. i couldn't undo the sender without taking the thermostat housing off. I've given up for tonight, but I noticed there wasn't a gasket between the thermostat housing and the head. Now it was me that put the thing together in the first place and I used some red hylomar type sealant. Will it be ok to use the red stuff again when putting it back together or should there be a proper gasket?

To get to the thermostat housing I had to take off the Ford coilpack which sits on a plate which seals the hole where the distributor used to drive off the end of the cam. The "hole" has been sealed with a Mini core plug and then what looks like some metal repair putty, the coil pack plate then bolts up flush against the end of the head using the two bolt holes which used to secure the dizzy and this should give a double seal. Unfortunately it leaks a little, might have been partly caused by a loose bolt. My question is what would be the best product to get a good oil seal between the plate (steel) and the alloy head? Would the red hylomar stuff do the trick?

Final question for when I get it all back together. The top hose from the heater to the bottom of the thermostat housing has a bust plastic bleed screw on it and I daren't try and open that in case it breaks. Will I be ok bleeding it through the thermostat housing and just squeezing the pipes to move any bubbles?

Many thanks

last time i tried to get the thermostat housing to seal without a gasket, I used some type of locktite gasket type stuff, didnt work for toffee, last about 2 days. So if there is a gasket available i'd say use that and a thin layer of sealant

as for the oil leak i'd imagine you'd need to check if the stuff youve got will get broken down by oil, some do I think

isnt there another bleed valve somewhere near the header tank?

I've been using this.. works great (but the smell is horrid) for both water and oil seals (+the inlet manifold)

Pug part no is 134030. Looks like you will need 2, one each side of the thermostat.

I've just bought some so I could post a couple out to you. For a nominal fee. :)
