Good News And 'thank You'

Hi all,

As you may be aware last week was somewhat of a landmark for my 205 in that it was finally put back on the road after 3 years of being SORN.

I had experienced most of the usual issues with idling, bad economy and general annoying electrical faults but I'm glad to say that the car passed the MOT last Tuesday after requiring some very minor work on the brakes and I've now done nearly 400 miles (including a trip to Skegness at the weekend) without her missing a beat :D

I want to say thanks to everyone who's contributed to my posts and helped me out on here as this forum has been my main source of information and advice and I also thought it might be useful for other beginners for me to quickly list the things I've done to transform my 205 as it really is like a new car now!

  • Replaced and set up Supplementary Air Device
  • Replaced ECU coolant sensor
  • Replaced radiator fan switch
  • Cleaned Throttle Body
  • Tested and made sure Throttle Position Switch working and set at correct initial position
  • New dizzy cap, rotor arm, spark plugs, air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, oil and coolant
  • All breathers cleaned and dried
  • Cooling system flushed through
  • Timing advanced

I must mention that although the new sensors and a good service really improved things, it wasn't until I adjusted the timing that the car really came alive again. This adjustment especially helped the idle in that after the other work the car idled fine but still suffered when an electrical drain was introduced but thanks to the forum I tried advancing it a couple of degrees and the idle leveled out fine. I was expecting it to pink like mad when driven but in fact it was absolutely fine and I was able to advance a little further - this has given her a new lease of life and I can, for the first time in my 205, drive around with my lights, wipers and heater fan on together without having my right foot across the brake and accelerator! All I can put this down to is the possibility of a previous owner/bad mechanic having the car converted/retarded for 95 RON when in fact it didn't need to be (1.6 non-CAT 8v)

Anyway - I'm really looking forward to going to the next East Mids meet actually in a 205 on May 8th and thanks again all for putting up with my multitude of questions and helping me so much.

Ian.
