Well, no surprise, it is a write off :( But I had a very odd conversation with the insurance company. I can't remember the exact words, but it went along the lines of:

Them: its a cat B its going to cost 5 grand to repair and get it road legal.

Me: I thought that would make it a cat C if it can be repaired but costs too much - is the body actually bent or something to make it a B?

Them: don't know - the estimate includes getting on the ramp to check.

Me: so it could be a c then

Them: No - for a car of this age, we assume anyone doing it on the cheap would cut corners and make it unsafe.

Me: But I want to know if its bent or not - that'll affect my decision on whether or not to buy the shell back.

Them: We can get it inspected if you want - at your expense....

Is it just me or does that sound odd ? I would have expected a clear and definitive answer of either its a c because it would cost too much to repair, or its a b because of XXXX damage .

Problem is I haven't got enough tape - especially as I'm going to have to replace it every time I open the door :D

The thing that was annoying me was that they were expecting me to pay to find out whether it was a B or a C - shouldn't that be part of their job?

Anyway, my rant must have worked - at no cost to me its been on the jig and its definitely a B....

Ask for a copy of the Assessors report/ Engineers report, this should iirc be an independent company not associated with the insurance company as they are regulated. They should have also included what they value the car at, therefore the settlement they are advising the insurance Company to payout.

Do not send your V5, MOT Certificate or a copy of your driving licence or agree to a valuation until you are satisfied.

Have you stated that you want salvage retention?

When my 205 was written off, it had far worse damage, but was classed as a Cat C and I retained the salvage. Salvage classification is sometimes wrong, and can be changed.

Once you receive the Engineers report post it up here and I will try to help if you want to keep your car.

The car is still your property until you agree to a settlement, you want it classing as Cat C and receive a cash payout less salvage cost.

As for placing the car on a jig and concluding that it's a CAT B sounds like Bulls*it to me, personally I would go and trailor the car to my own property until this is resolved, otherwise it may just get taken away and sold on.

Thanks for the advice. I'm afraid its a bit late though - I bit his hand off when he offered me £2000 for it. Did say I want the salvage retention though.

At the moment, I've got all the paperwork though - V5 etc...
