Paint Stripper On Wheels

Recommended Posts

CaptainP

I'm currently in the process of restoring another set of 15" speedlines and I'm finding that the paint is a 'mare to remove on this particular set. I've previously restored 2 other sets but on those I used 'Nitromors Automotive' paint stripper, and although it was still a time consuming job it was achievable. The set I'm working on at the moment I'm using 'Bartoline TX10 Paint & Varnish Stripper' as my local factors didn't have any Nitromors and assured me that this was good stuff. It's possible that I have been unlucky with this set of wheels and that the paint is just particularly stubborn but my gut feeling is that this TX10 stuff isn't a patch on the Nitromors. Has anyone else used Bartoline TX10 on wheels, and how did you find it?t

They have reduced the amount of the active ingredient in Nitromors (for environmental reasons  ) & TBH it is now rubbish. I remember that if you got some Nitromors on your skin it was a quick dash to wash it off as it burned immediatly. You could paint your arm with the current stuff & it doesn't even sting.

I got a bottle of stuff locally which is as good as the old Nitromors & a lot cheaper. I forget the name now but I will check tomorrow & let you know.

There are certain types of paint which chemical stripper has little effect on, especially powdercoating. I was doing a set of wheels recently & I gave up trying to strip them chemically. I got them shot blasted instead & TBH I don't think I would be using chemical stripper again. When you count your time & the cost of stripper blasting works out cheaper. You get a far superior surface for painting & there's no mess from stripping.

Careful with nitromors though cause it will have your face off as well as the paint!

The stuff was Tetrion paint stripper. You should get it in most diy shops.

What you want is airplane paint stripper!! It works a treat!! If you know anyone in the trade then it's easy to get but still quite expensive... For good reason though!! It works!!!

Lol

I got a mate who's an airplane mechanic, he got some for another mate with some Williams wheels that had about a dozen layers of different paint on top of powdercoated original... They looked like this with a little applied and left for 10...

Then after a few more applications...

They're only to be used as a track set, but cleaned up easy and fairly quick...

That's some kick @ss paintstripper, that's how it should be imo. My time costs me nothing so I'm gonna persevere with the rest of this Bartoline bottle then maybe try and get some stronger stuff......
