How To Wire Up An Oil Level Sensor

Recommended Posts

dave205

As title really, i have a 406 turbo engine in my 205 and want to wie the oil level sensor up to a LED but not sure how to do it. The sensor has 2 cables on it, i assume just live and earth?

It's a proper level sensor for controlling a gauge. The resistance between the two pins varies according to the oil level, rather than just being a simple on/off switch.

Another way to do it is to use the clocks off a high spec BX - these are the same fitment as a 205 but have the additional gubbins required for oil level, which is displayed on the oil temperature gauge for several seconds after switching the ignition on. I've not personally done it, but there's at least a couple of people that have if you do a search and look back through old projects.

many zx's have the gubbins, and 306's, would need modifying to fit unlike the BX ones.

Does anyone have a table of resistance levels of the sensor with oil at min and max? fancy knocking up a system to do this with standard dials.

There's nothing in the Haynes manuals for either the 205 or BX, maybe one of the others might have it but I don't have copies.

You can probably test it yourself with a multimeter and a jar of oil.

nothing but the wiring diagrams in the zx manuals, just a 2 wire sensor both wires from the cluster.

If both cables run to the cluster there must be a way of getting it to work with a gauge or light etc. The 406 diagram shows it running into a control module or something similair first,
