Is A Speedo That Only Reads In Kph Legal

Recommended Posts

Friend is importing an ae86,

it doesn't have a speedo in the dash, only a kph readout on one of it's tuning boxes.

is this going to pass sva / mot?

Same question about odometer - it doesn't have one.

cheers

j

my dads old escort van passed its mot 3 years in a row without a working speedo, it would only come up as an advisory on the certificate

For what it's worth, my Eunos passed it's SVA in 2007 and 3 subsequent MOT's with a kph-only speedo.

Whether it should have passed is another matter entirely, and whether it's still the same today as it was then I don't know.

Annoyed me greatly though, so the first (and only) change I made to the car was to buy a UK instrument cluster and adjust the mileage to match the old clocks - converting the km reading into miles, obviously.

I had a left hand drive Belgian 205 with just kph, I never got told off, although I was fairly ignorant to speed limits as a result.

It doesn't seem to be enforced as much on the mainland uk, but I know over here in N.Ireland because government centres do mot is very tight! I have to change clocks in my cars to read mph and kph. One has a mph sticker over it and reads wayyy out on speed but yet a perfect calibrated kph is not acceptable!

Answer to original post, not just put the likes of a stack mph system in it to keep it right if it's a tuned car?

Im sure I passed an mot without a working speedo before, I had memorised what revs were what speed in each gear. Shame the rev counter was so inaccurate...

Although I thought there was some kind of regulation that says it has to be within 10% of the correct speed or something?

Neither is strictly part of an MOT test, but i've no doubt a tester might fail or at least advise if for some reason(brake test) it was noticed.

Another vote for it here, my speedo didnt work for a couple of years on my 306, was never mentioned by an mot tester. Just memorise those revs to speeds!

Deffo wouldn't pass in northern Ireland. My gen5 celica gtr was a grey import and I had to change the clocks to mph to get it passed. I just changed the dials so it never read the right speed as it was trying to read in kph lol
