Rear Beam Help Needed.

Recommended Posts

Hi there people...I have just purchased a 205 1.9 GTI. I used to have one 20 years ago and after having other weird and wonderful cars i decided to go back to my youth. I have only just joined this site and it looks great. So obviously i am not really a mechanic or good at spotting problems. I have already killed about a grand in 3 weeks on this motor but i did pick her up cheap. Today i have taken her in to my local garage where they have confirmed that the rear beam is no good. The drivers side wheel is facing inwards....and here's me just thinking that it was something simple to fix !!! Amazingly i took the car to Peugeot for a full service and said to go over it and tell me everything that was wrong with it and they said that the beam was ok and they didn't even notice that the wheel was facing inwards. I believe that i have 2 options, replace or rebuild. I am trying to way up the costs. I see that you can by kits off ebay for about £40 a side alternatively, i can get a beam off another car that isn't reconditioned but guaranteed to be within Peugeot camber spec for around £200 with the brakes etc on it. My local garage said that they would have a bash at it if i bought the whole assy for about £150. I live in the West Midlands (Redditch). Is there anyone close who can help me out, as in is there a specialist in my area? and do we agree that these prices are ok? and how much should someone be charging me to do the work if they change bearings or recon it?

Afternoon,

My recommendation would be to purchase a refurbished one from a member on this site. I got one from Tom Fenton (based further north),which made a massive difference to the ride and the quality was great.

However, it will be in the region of around £400.

I'm not far from Wrexham, and can supply you a rebuilt beam.

I could also fit it for you if you want

There is a wealth of knowledge and info on this site, and some very helpful people! I recently comepleted this exact job with help from member james_pug.

I bought all the bits, probably over and above what i needed (basically anything that could come off i replaced with new) and ended up with this. I bought the shafts and bearings from a supplier off of eBay and the rest of parts i bought direct from Peugeot.

I did also have the pictured donor beam to build beforehand which was a bonus.

Thanks for your help peeps. I am not being ignorant but have only just found how to get back to this post as being a new member and all. I have looked at places called Axle Direct and also IM axle which is closer to me (sorry if i am not supposed to quote these places. Not sure on forum rules yet). They have different prices etc. Got to admit that i am not really looking at getting my hands to dirty on this problem with limited knowledge and all. Looks like the prices being quoted are realistic though. Do i take a flyer on a non recon beam or are the recon ones really that good as i have heard some horror stories on the quality of them?
