Engine Romoval 2005 Xsara Vts

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys.

Ive been asked to remove a motor from an Xsara VTS. Ive done about 10 removals from Mi16/205 etc but never an Xsara. Are there any little things that I may come up against I need to know about. I only have one day to do it in and its also 300Ks ( 180miles ) away from my house so want to make sure I have all the tools and know how before I get there.

What size is the Hub nuts. Same as a 1.9 205 gti? 35mm?

Unlocking ECU, Position 2 on the IGN and then un plug it?

Gearbox will be coming with it so no dramas about that being separated. Although I think I know how if need be. Remove pin etc?

Any special wires/sensors I may need for it? ( its going into a 205 )

From my understanding...

Crack hub nuts off.

Jack car up.

Drain fluids.

Remove most of the front end to make removal easy.

Undo exhaust, speedo, clutch cable, gear rods.

Any piping that may be attached

Undo and remove drive shafts

Take weight with Hoist.

Undo mounts

Remove?

Have you got to leave the remains rolling or not? If not, the way I would do it is to drop the front subframe assy off the car first. It is not tha much work to remove, split lower arm balljoints and track rod ends, undo drop links or cut thru if you can. Disconnect gear linkage. Disconnect steering u/j. Undo the bolts securing the frame to the car and drop it down. You then get better access to the exhaust/downpipe joint, and you can also then easily lower the entire engine and box down to the floor without having to fight with it. You can also remove the steering rack from the frame and take it, as its a great upgrade to a 205.

I didn't realise they came as late as 2005!

I would certainly check that it is an XU10 firstly as many countries ther than the UK had high spec cars badged as the VTS with different engines.

as its a post 99/2000 car, you dont need to worry about the ecu as its junk in a 205, you need to source a 306 or phase1 xsara ecu and loom.

when i took an engine out of my 2002 xsara it was a right twat, they do not like to come out the top of the engine bay

take what Tom has said and do it that way, drop it out the bottom.

There is a lower front slam panel with is spot welded in place, it did not want to move, but it also meant we couldnt angle the engine to get it out the top. in the end we cut the front end iirc and pull it straight out.

Out the top, here dead easy and quick,

as WP said the ECU will be no use as the late car's are Multi Plex'd, even the battery box and ECU are no good for the 205 so these all need to be found from a 306 GTi

I've never dropped the engine out the bottom, and have broken quite a few cars with this engine in, the diesels are often just as fiddly.

this engine has a single bolt V-band type clamp to the downpipe.

Ok there are a few great responses here. The car definitely has the xu10j4rs motor in it. 100%. Im also not sure if its Multiplexed or not. If so I will have to source one from either here ( oz ) or the UK. I have normally taken the motors out the bottom with gearbox but have recently taken them out the top. I think I will have to assess things once i know whats what when Im down there.

Removal of the subframe is quite appealing as getting access to the exhaust is going to be tough.

I have always been after an Xsara 2.4 steering rack. Anyone have any idea of what this one will be?

Rack should be either 2.4 turn if it has the earlier headlamps, or 2.6 turn if it has the later frog eye type. Either way it is easy enough to check with it off the car, and either rack is still a great upgrade.

it'll definitely be a multiplex car from 05, steering rack will be 2.6 turns, you will need to retain the pipework as it differed to the earlier ones.

Access to the exhaust isn't an issue, just cut the single retaining bolt and off the downpipe comes, with the gearbox mounting stud removed, drop the transmission under the chassis leg then swing the timing belt end of the engine forwards and up and out you go.

Awesome, thanks guys. Whats a standard 205 steering rack? I thought it was 2.7 turns?

Im going to be getting a BBM Pipe kit to fit to the 205. Do I still need all pipes?

Its the later MK2 frog type car. I have attached some pictures

Pictures are too big sorry....

Not sure how to compress them

I've never taken any XU engine out through the top. I always just let the engine/gearbox assembly drop to the floor. Too easy.

Yea I think to the floor is going to be the go. ANy more on the turns lock to lock on the 205 rack? 2.6 turns is very enticing. I want power assistance though. ( this engine is not for my car btw )

Standard 205 pas rack is 3.2 turns. Standard 205 non-pas rack is a bus like 3.9 turns.

Easy enough. I strip all the mechanicals on them in 3 hours.

35/36mm hub nut, ecu no good. The only pain is the down pipe olive clamp if pointing the wrong way and is 16mm. Ive left these till last and dragged the engine forward before on the hoist to gain access.

Yea I think to the floor is going to be the go.

It will be even easier if you loose the cross member. Just make sure you've 600mm under the front, in order to slide it out.

Will do Pete.

Ive also slid engines out the passenger side wheel arch if things get a little tight. Hopefuly there will be no dramas. Ive also just bought the rack so looking forward to getting that on the 205 also!

Will try and get that cam to you on Friday also

This is the most unhelpful post ever but the xsara vts stopped production in '04. Mine was an '04 vts and was one of the last few xu10j4rs engines off the production line (according to RP number). With regards to engine removal; i find that its no worse than a 306 - take it out the top with it tilted way down towards the gearbox side.

Sam. The car is in Australia, we had a few left overs sent here. Production actually stopped in 2006 I believe according Wiki. It also states the the j4rs stopped in the xsara in 04 so makes no sense. This car definitely has the rs motor as pictured though.

loosing the air box creates alot of room in the engine bay when pulling out, personally i dip the gear box down and turn the engine 90 degrees with the cambelt end out the front and lift it out. Saves messing about with seized sub frame bolts which these cars suffer from quite a bit.

Pm on route...

You'll also need a 306 top mount, The phase 2 xsara one's are different again

Ahh the beauty of living in a sunny country means that nuts and bolts seizing is very rare. Rust is never an issue either unless they have been crashed.

Thanks for the advice guys.
