Optimum Power For A 205..?

Recommended Posts

MiniGibbo

As above really, this was sparked on another forum and got me thinking.. what would you class as the perfect power for a 205 before it gets too much for the chassis and youre just fighting it all the time.

Id of guessed 200hp..?

You are asking the wrong question really, it is torque that needs more consideration.

what spurred it was a discussion on saxp comparing a 300hp 106 to a 300hp evo/scoob/m3/s4..

In my mind no matter how fun the 106/saxo are theyll never out drive the larger cars around a track.

Asked on e36coupe, and the masses seem to share my opinion.

Depends on use I would have thought, the requirements for a 1/4 mile drag car are very different to those of a rally car and those again are different from a circuit or hillclimb car. The questions a bit to vague to be answered easily.

Tell two time Castle Combe tintops champ Nick Charles and his 225+ bhp 106 gti that :P n-a of course, and regularly beat Rover Tomcat Turbo's and Turbo Leon's, EVO's etc that all had a significant power and torque advantage.

Two in a million, thats like hiring a transit then wondering why you can hit 10's around the 'Ring like Sabine did..

Same average driver in both, the m3/evo/scoob will lap faster and easier.

Depends on the track! Go to Silverstone GP circuit and that may well be the case, go to something twistier and watch the tables turn.

Somewhere just north of 1000bhp seems about right.

I agree with Cameron, you mentioned the ring and there are some massive straights (from what I've seen on GT5) so will clealry favour big engine M3 type cars with the gearbox to match the requirements, but stick that at the Harewood Hillclimb for example and the balance is very much back in the favour of the 205.

Would that be optimised for burnouts?

Not many true straights at the 'Ring IMO..

If you do a trackday there the long straight pasy the cafe os open but open days thats shut, what looks straight on a game just isn't lol.

There's plenty of sections of the 'ring that big power cars will benefit from, the huge uphill slog being where the most gains could be made! A 200bhp 205 will still struggle up that as it's such a high speed section, something with a tonne of power will piss all over it.

depends which engine is producing that 200 bhp, a highly strung 1600 on bodies, an MI/gti6 on bodies, or a turbo'd 1.6, or a mildly cammed 2.2 on bodies, or a V6?

If in doubt flat out, that's the best sort of power. The only things that did me on the ring were Porsches and bmw's especially the old school e36 beasts. It wasn't a case of power but sheer grip, them things hang on like s*it to a blanket. There's no really really long straights on the ring as such ,its just some really slow corners with big hills that you really need boost and torque or you get left for dead. As such the question is how much torque=how big your balls are with big hp. Cos a 200brake na beast has lost a lot of its torque by the high revs whereas your average turbo car is still holding some good torque. This makes it feel like its still pulling like mad at 130mph, whereas na your rocking in the seat going come on, come on. (Another can of worms opened)

305bhp please, 200ft.lb of torque or more, not too peaky please, a nice spreaded wad of grunt. I'm not fussed about having too much provided the throttle isn't binary.

Oh, and a decent 'diff and moulded slicks ;-)
