Bending A Hollow Tube (Gear Rod)

Recommended Posts

lemmingzappa

Would it be possible for me to put a bend in this hollow gear rod without cracking or splitting it ? I'm not sure what they're made of, but if I could do it without specialist tools that would be great !

Is it a case of heating up the area which needs bending with a blow torch and then just putting it in a vice or something ?

Also if I manage to bend it, is it likely to end up too short and not fit correctly, the reason i'm doing this is to gain some clearance from the 4-branch manifold which isn't the greatest design.

just stick it in a vice and give it a tweak, its steel, though I don't think you can bend that as it sits in a bush just in front of the gearstick which wont have any lateral play in it, if you do bend it you'd need to move the ball on the subframe.

got a 4-branch on my car and have no gear linkage issues at all though, even with an added lambda.

try shifting the engine over, the transmission mount gives about half an inch of sideways movement.

If you can fill it full of sand then bend it around a radius that way you can bend with out kinks.

If I drill a new hole further along the subframe, is there enough play at the gearstick end so that I won't need to bend the rod ?

As far as i'm aware the engine is already over to one side as much as it can be.
