Replacing Mullered Nipples

Recommended Posts

gavbrum

Get a blow torch on them after soaking them in penetrating fluid.

If the calliper is off the car then lock the bleed nipple in the vice as you heat the area of the calliper with the thread. Then gently unscrew by turning the calliper.

This technique has worked perfectly every time for me.

Worked even when there was hardly anything of the bleed nipple left.

Whilst the Irwin bolt extractors are great, I'd personally not use them on rounded off nipples. The torque that you can apply to get a stubborn bolt/nipple to budge can be big. I doubt a nipple would handle it and just shear off.

I have to agree with this. The problem with the alloy calipers is not that you cannot grip the hexagon, the problem is getting the nipple out without shearing it off due to the steel nipple being corroded into the alloy body.

Stainless reacts with alloy as badly as steel does. Use brass nipples for alloy calipers.
