Sloppy Gears And Cold Running Issues

Recommended Posts

john-melbourne

Hi Guys,

I recently bought a CTI and have noticed the Gear stick seems to have a lot of movement while in neutral, and the shift from 1st to second gear seems about a mile :) What are the things to check for/replace and is there a logical order to check things?

Sorry for the stupid questions, just Dont want to spend £60+ on new parts for someone to tell me i could of done it for a couple of quid :)

Also, the car has a real cold start issue, when it had snowed the other day the car would not start at all, i tried throughout various times of the day to now avail. The day after when the weather was a bit nicer she started after about 10 seconds of trying, but will not run on her own steam until she has warmed up. Once running she is absolutely fine as i drove her home 200 miles and she didn't miss a beat, although i used a full tank of fuel on that journey! I have purchased a new ECU temp sensor in the hope that helps with the fuel economy. i have read a few things about the SAD, and about taking that off to clean it, but other people have said that once its gone its gone and its best to replace it. Again what would be the logical route to determine the cause of the cold starting problems?

Sorry again for all the questions, i am not very mechanic minded but am eager to learn, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

John

Hi,

Too much movement in the gear stick can be due wear in gearchange link rods and the lever pin wich rotates in a plastic bush so you should start there.

About the cold start issue maybe there's moisture in your distributor cap, give it a good clean and check the points on corrosion.

first place to check with the linkages is the ball pivot that is on the subframe, 13mm nut through a hole in the bottom of the subframe, use a spanner on the top to stop it turning.

that will sort most out, further than that there's a pair of nylon top hat bushes in a quadrant on the subframe, also a smaller diameter pair on the gearstick itself, these are stil available for a few quid from peugeot.

Thanks for the replies guys, Is it easy to check the linkages and ball pivots or would the car need to be on a ramp?

All can be seen from above, may need to take the Air box off if still fitted

Stupid question, but is this all covered in the haynes manual?

mostly :)

if you haven't got one though you will need to find a "workshop" manual, not the "service and repair" ones.

The later manuals from around 1993 are only useful to wipe something you sit on

The "old" haynes 205 was indeed definitely much better than the ones you can buy now, for instance they explain the complete gearbox overhaul.

If you are going to change the top hat bushes, I would recommend you get a pair of the white plastic gear rod block bushes as well, as once I had changed the top hat bushes, it merely drew attention to the up-and-down slop in the gearchange!

Havent got a part number to hand I'm afraid.

Thanks Craig,

How much did that all cost in total?

The white blocks are 2430 18 and are £2.80 each (need 2)

And the bushes, I got bronze ones from bakerbm, which are around £35 for all of the bushes, if I remember. Peugeot are much cheaper for the original plastic versions though.
