Recommendation For A Good 'complete' Socket Set

Has anyone a recommendation for a good 'complete' socket set? Last weekend I took back my Halfords Advanced 150 piece I've had since September after I went to take the rocker cover off my g/fs 106 with a deep 13mm socket - it was then that I realised their deep sockets are only machined about 1-1.5cm into the socket (depending on the size). The socket just wouldn't grip properly as the nuts that hold the rocker are about 1" tall and are the drive faces are not machined into them until about 1/3 of the way down.

 

The design of the deep Halfords sockets is with a shoulder/lip inside that meant the drive faces of the socket didn't contact properly with those on the nut because the shoulder rested on the top of the nut! The only thing the deep sockets would be any use for are taking a normal sized nut off a longer than usual thread. Naturally I was not happy - this is a recent change too as a mate has the exact same set with properly machined deep sockets. (The chap in Halfords did offer to swap them out for a set on a rail, but the railed sets he had only had 2 sizes that were still the older 'deep-machined' sockets.)

 

So, I am in the market for a replacement of the Halfords Advanced that has the same kit, for around £130 as that's what I originally paid (happy to go a bit higher for the right set).

i would just buy the sockets that you need when you need them as you say the set you have is good for most things.

2nd hand bluepoint? I've been super happy with my 150 advanced set, got most things except deep 16mm and some other bits and bobs. I've only broken the 8mm allen socket so far just need to get around to going in and getting it replaced.

I got a cheap socket set, and replaced everything i broke bit by bit, no point paying out for a snap on 20mm socket when you never or hardly use it. good ratchet is a must tho.

Blue point socket set is good, got one for work and one at home. Same the deep sockets are multihex/12 point.

 

Just watch out if you thinking of buying them of ebay, i'v seen a few set selling for more then i paid new!?

i use the snap on / blue point service set and havent found really found anything it cant cope with!

 

expensive yes but worth it if you use your tools a lot!

I had a look in a store called Chaplins, socket sets , spanners all around a fiver. They looked crap and i would not even give them to a kid as a present. How ever some people were buying them!
