Roland Garros Cab Vs Cti

Recommended Posts

amateurish

I've been on the hunt for a nice CTI, and bid on a couple on eBay. However, I've just spotted a rather nice RG convertible for sale which seems to fit the bill. However, I'm concerned that 85bhp is going to feel pretty weedy compared to the 115bhp in the CTI. Has anyone driven both and able to comment on their relative merits? Or maybe XS vs 1.6 GTI, which I believe have the same engines.

i am pretty sure the xs has a tu series engine and the cti an xu series like the gti's?

Sorry, my post wasn't clear. I was interested in the comparison between a RG cab and a CTI. I thought that a similar comparison could be made between an XS and 1.6 GTI since the RG has the same engine as the XS, and the CTI the same as the 1.6 GTI.

in real world terms there's not likely to be much in it as the TU engine+box is lighter, there's no gti trim etc to weigh it down.

Can't comment on RG vs CTi, but have owned both XS and 1.6 GTi models.

The 1.6 is faster outright as you'd expect, but the XS is surprisingly spritely, revs eagerly, and feels much lighter over the front wheels and the benefits that brings with agility and turn in. Whether that would directly translate with the RG/CTi I couldn't say though - in particular, does the RG share the same short-ratio gearbox as the XS as that would be fairly crucial IMO?

yeah the rg has the same tu3s engine as the xs, suprisingly enjoyable engine, very keen and nippy, although bare in mind the soft top might be heavier than the hard top so it may feel sluggish.

the other thing to note is the front supension set up may be different; the RG will have track control arms like a base model (not neccesarily i bad thing, but many will tell you it is)

not sure what the front suspension set up is on the cti, but I assume it'll be similar to the gti

Thanks for the comments. RG cab weighs 885kg I believe vs 935kg for the CTI. Both RG and CTI have the base model suspension setup apprently. Don't know about the gearbox.

Cti does indeed have tca's and it does have the short ratio box on the RG cab.

Firstly, unless it's unclear...yes, the CTi has the base model suspension, so you would gain little in the handling department if you went for the CTi over the RG.

When I first started looking at buying a 205 cabriolet, I wasn't particularly interested in the GTi version, the CTi. So I looked at quite a lot of 1.4 Juniors, & a Roland Garros. I liked the RG. It, as you probably know, was a limited edition (just 500 I believe). Liked the wheels, spotlights & leather trim. Didn't like the slashed roof which the trader had forgotten to tell me about, or the £1000 + for a new one without labour. He in turn didn't like my offer of £800 less than his (price of one with good roof!) asking price, & instead of negotiating, suggested i "went home & had a cup of tea"!

Anyway, that made me consider the CTi. I test drove 3 CTis, & must have driven nearly 10 1.4s.

In the end, I bought the CTi, more because I liked the style. Performance wise...frankly not much discernible difference, & I was expecting a big difference! So, if tenths of a second aren't a great concern, I'd certainly consider the Roland Garros...the dark green is also a nice change from all the red & white CTis & blue Juniors. Peugeot weren't keen on chucking the paint around on their cabriolets!

shame its not the original front bumper, and the missing white pinstripe down the side of the car is missing, other than that its a lovely example
