Tom Fenton 1,536 Posted April 3, 2012 I know some say its ok some not. And there you have the answer so why start a new topic? Some have done it and been OK, others have had shafts pop out which is game over.
p1234 22 2 Cars Posted April 3, 2012 Every 1.6 shaft/ hub, 309 wishbone are made to the same diamensions so why does it happen to some and not to others, Im just asking if anyone has had it happen while rallying.
allanallen 528 2 Cars Posted April 3, 2012 Every 1.6 shaft/ hub, 309 wishbone are made to the same diamensions so why does it happen to some and not to others, Aftermarket shafts vary in length more than you think! Fit the wishbones/shaft/hub etc without a spring fitted, you can then check the shaft through the suspension travel with varying amounts of lock on. If you think they're too short you can space the shaft at the hub end if your really on a budget.
Anthony 1,002 Posted April 3, 2012 Every 1.6 shaft/ hub, 309 wishbone are made to the same diamensions so why does it happen to some and not to others Those magic words "tolerances" and "variations" As an example, when you're fitting an engine/gearbox, there's a degree of left and right movement that you can take advantage of to give additional cambelt cover clearance for the MC on 16v conversions. That could easily be 10mm or more, which is the difference between a 205 and 309 driveshaft...
Baz 421 Posted April 3, 2012 You're presuming all 205's are the same, they are NOT!
shalmaneser 26 Posted April 8, 2012 I was running 1.6 hubs + D/S with 309 wishbones, they were absolutely fine but I certainly wasn't rallying it! Does that help?
p1234 22 2 Cars Posted April 8, 2012 I've fitted them to my gti6 for a track day tomorrow, see how they go.
Chris H 10 Posted April 8, 2012 Hope you haave a trouble free track day and have a good fun day. I've always run 309 shafts but thats because i've always run then and proved to be touble free so see no reason to use a 205 length shaft.
p1234 22 2 Cars Posted April 9, 2012 Was like a different car through the corners, seriously wet day but sailed around all day like it was dry out, Advise anybody on track with a 205 to fit these, completly transformed the cornering ability of the car. Very wishy washy steering, took a bit of getting used to, really had to work the steering wheel but as soon as I got a sus of it it was flying. Yet again a 205 puts a smile on my face. welshpug 1,646 Posted April 9, 2012 did you adjust the tracking after fitting them?
p1234 22 2 Cars Posted April 9, 2012 Eh nop, never even came into my head to do the tracking
welshpug 1,646 Posted April 9, 2012 that'll be why the steering was rather "odd" you'll be running 10mm of toe out, each side!
p1234 22 2 Cars Posted April 9, 2012 Ha Ha ooops, better see to that! Still though serious cornering ability even on a water logged track.
welshpug 1,646 Posted April 9, 2012 heh, I just got my brother to do a very rough guesstimate on a graphics drawing programme as to how far out the tracking would be, 27mm toe out, each side! ROFLMAO
johnnyboy666 195 1 Cars Posted April 9, 2012 how did you go in a straight line!!?? I attempted to just move my car forward two feet after changing mine over and the wheels just fought against each other!
p1234 22 2 Cars Posted April 9, 2012 Car pulled straight as an arrow on the straight.
kenp 3 Posted April 17, 2012 No probs with the driveshafts then?
p1234 22 2 Cars Posted April 28, 2012 No hassle with the drive shafts.
allanallen 528 2 Cars Posted April 28, 2012 Are you sure you've not just fitted another set of 205 wishbones? Without considerably lengthening the TREs it would of been un-drivable and very, very noticeable to look at!
skinner2k3 3 Posted May 1, 2012 I also found the 309 arms made a very noticable difference. How you drove it without adjusting the tracking is odd. I hade mine set parallel with 205 arms, fitted the 309 arms and could barely drive the thing 1/2 mile to the garage to get it tracked!
