205 Rallye Or 106 Rallye ?

Recommended Posts

TRMB84GTI

As I have sold my 205 GTI recently I am going to be looking at buying a new car next year. All my spare money going into my wedding so sadly the car side of things is on the back burner.

I really like the idea of a 205 or 106 rallye. I was hoping I could gauge some opinions on whats good or bad about both models? What you would recommend to spend and so on. I have thought about things a like a type-r civic and so on but just cant get myself in the modern car way of thinking, just not happening!

So at this moment in time I am unsure but hey lets see what you guys say.

Thanks ,

Tom

Given that your chances of finding a 205 Euro Rallye for anything like vaguely sensible money are slim, I'd personally go for a 106 Series 1 Rallye with the screamer of a 1.3 engine. Fantastic little cars and an absolute hoot to drive, if getting a bit thin on the ground now and an unmolested one is sure to appreciate in value as a result.

I'm not a fan of 205 UK Rallyes in standard form thanks to the (IMO) dreadful engine/gearbox combination, least of all with the premium they demand, and the 106 Series 2 Rallye lost a lot of the zing of the earlier car although it does still look the part and is a reasonable drive.

Another option along the same lines is a 205 XS - a car far closer to the Rallye ethos than the 205 UK Rallye was, and frankly criminally under-rated. I sorely miss mine and was tempted to buy it back when it recently came up for sale - it wasn't hugely quick, but it was frantic and turn-in and lightness in the nose that made an average GTi look slow witted.

Oh cheers Anthony, the series 1 106 rally is the one that I like the most! I had been really thinking about one in the past and had one scream past me last weekend! I said to my mrs I would love to get one of thos, in reply she said yeah no worries they are cheap! Lol that is a first, got permission to get one :P

106 Rallye 1300 for definite, sorry to the 205 UK Rallye owners but they don't even come close.

The Series 2 106 Rallye 1600 is also good fun, a mate of mine had one for a while.

It's funny you say that as when I was looking, all I wanted was a cherry red s1 Rallye but ended up bringing a yellow 205 home :D

what would you call sensible money for an euro rallye? I have seen one for 2750 recently.

I have seen a couple of nice looking s1's advertised oh PH for 1500-1800 quid. I was just sorta seeing if they were a tad on the expensive side or a good buy? I wouldn't really wanna spend a fortune but then again if you buy cheap you tend to buy into problems.

s1 106's seem to demand a premium if the owner has ever seen the "rallye reg", i budgeted 2k for one but even then they normally need work..

Minters are £3500+

id be inclined to say that 50% of the s1 rallyes on the road now havee a 16v engine, with a different gearbox. the best part of the s1 rallye was the gearbox. that or a s1 1.4 xsi!

A mate had a 1.4 xsi which came from his next door neighbour, 1 owner from new, 188k on the clocks, never had a hg, 1 clutch. happily sat at 110 for an hour which was impressive to say the least!

There is a 106 s1 rallye in a barn close to me, which was being used to transport the odd sheep from farm to farm! the guy thought it was 4x4 which is why he bought it ... teehee

Thought it was a 4x4 LMAO!! fail!! So they could be a bit steep then? Bloody hell why cant buying a nice little car just be fricken easy! I was hoping to spend about 2k max or a car like that so maybe get a half decent one you never know....

Bit biased because we have had one in the familly for quite a few years, and now me and my dad compete in it.

S1 106 rallye's are awesome and if I didn't already have 3 cars I'd have one of these as a toy.Like said most are now 16v which ruins them imo,the 1.3 is a little screamer and sounds awesome with a green air filter.

Do it mate and you won't regret it!

I hate to say it but a S1 106 Rallye out of the box, 106's are also slowly shrugging off their chavvy image.

Or S1 106 Rallye 1.6 16v

There is a white S1 106 rallye local to me for sale.

I was tempted but found it was 16v converted. If it had been stock I would have bought it to run through the summer.

I drove a stripped out S1 106 XSi years ago. That felt great. Was like a go kart - as much as I hate people comparing cars to handling like go karts, that was as close as I have ever felt to it in a car. Was revvy, sharp to turn in and blew me away.

It's in the second from the bottom section in threads on here, easy to spot as it'll be one of the first.

I'd link you but it's a pain on the phone..

I haven't driven a standard uk 205 Rallye do can't give opinion on that but I'm glad I got mine over a s1, I'd still like a s1 though lol
