Bulkhead Grommet / Loom Seal

Recommended Posts

allye

Just wondering what others have done reference the loom going through the bulkhead (under expansion tank) with 16v conversions etc. I've got the original loom grommet from the xs that I managed to hack saw off quite tidy but obviously is not way near wide enough to fit both light and engine looms in and get through the bulkhead.

So I thought I might enlarge the hole and see it I can get it on.

I want to sort it as with the Rallye you could open the glove box and get a nice breeze coming in

Cheers, Ali

Google "split grommet".

No idea where I got one from, possibly somewhere like RS.

I just enlarged the hole in the bonnet cable grommit and ran the '6 loom through that, resulting in a nice snug fit.

The lighting loom side I've left untouched.

Dammit! Should have done that, the split grommet seals are stupidly expensive, think I'll have a play with the XS one and see if I can get that to work.

I did as Anthony.

Removed the bonnet release cable grommet, cut a slit into it and enlarged the hole with a knife until it was a snug fit around the loom and then re attached.

In order to get the plugs through the hole, I cut two slits (the width of the plug) with a hacksaw, bent the tab and pushed the plugs through. Bent the tabs back into their original position, treated the bare metal with a touch up pen and re-fitted the grommet. You can't see the small slits as they are covered by the grommet itself.

No need to cut any metalwork - the two brown plugs just about squeeze through :)

(and even if they didn't, it's easy to remove the pins from the plugs, feed them through, and refit back into the plugs)

I really hate having to drill holes or cut into the shells, its something I always try to avoid at all costs. Think I'll go down the bonnet realse grommet route then, as as you say anthony easy enough to take the pins out and put them back on the inside.

Same here with the OE grommet, I tend to run a bead of suitable sealant around it just to make sure it's 100% air tight
